Carapace is a layered pendant of hand-spun metal shades around an opal glass globe, made by CTO Lighting of London. It is 12.6 in across and 5.5 in high.
It comes in 2 suspensions: a bronze drop rod or a bronze oval chain with black silk flex. The finish is bronze with satin brass details, with opal glass.
The Design Story
Carapace reinterprets a 1920s classic. CTO layers hand-spun metal shades in bronze and brass, and cuts holes in the brass spinning so light glows from within the bronze. The opal glass at the center spreads the light evenly. The profile is compact and symmetrical, so it has impact without taking over the room.
The Story of CTO Lighting
Chris and Clare Turner founded CTO Lighting in London in 1998 on one principle: design lights of uncompromising quality, using only the finest materials and working with elite British craftsmen. Chris is an engineer who designs and builds with meticulous detail, and Clare brings the eye of fashion. Together they built a name for understated luxury in hand-finished brass, mouth-blown glass and artisan-cut stone, and the collection has gone on to light The Savoy, The Dorchester, St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and Chiltern Firehouse.
How It Was Made
The shades are hand-spun in metal and finished in bronze and brass by CTO's craftspeople, and CTO assembles each Carapace to order in England.
The Finishes
Bronze with satin brass details. A deep, rich bronze outer shade over a warm brass inner layer. The bronze brings historical weight to a modern room, and the brass gives it a soft, golden glow.
Opal Glass. A shiny opal glass globe at the center diffuses the light evenly.

CTO suggests hanging Carapace in multiples of three over a kitchen island or a long dining table, or low as a feature that replaces a table or floor lamp. The drop rod gives a clean, architectural line, and the chain with black silk flex gives a softer, more traditional look.
Made for Real Life
The 110-130V version takes one G9 bulb, 25W maximum halogen or a 2.3W LED at 2700K, and needs a dimmable bulb with a trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimmer to dim. The chain version weighs 11 lb and the drop rod version weighs 13.2 lb, and CTO asks you to check that the ceiling can carry it. It is IP20 for dry indoor rooms and hangs 39.4 in below the ceiling rose as supplied, adjustable on site. Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Skip detergents and abrasives.

The drop rod version has a bronze rod and weighs 13.2 lb (6 kg). The chain version has a bronze oval chain with black silk flex and weighs 11 lb (5 kg). Both are 12.6 in (320 mm) across.
Is the Carapace pendant dimmable?
Yes, with a dimmable bulb. CTO lists a trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimmer for the 110-130V version.
What bulb does it take?
One G9 bulb, up to 25W halogen, or a 2.3W LED at 2700K. CTO does not list a bulb as supplied.
How far does it hang?
CTO supplies a 39.4 in (1000 mm) drop rod or flex and chain that you adjust on site. The minimum overall drop is 8.5 in (215 mm).
Can I hang several together?

How do I clean it?
