Bolio, a globe divided between mirror and glass

Bolio takes the familiar globe and splits it down the middle: one half is metallic, the other transparent and reflective. The result looks different from every angle, flashing the room back at you on one side and letting the lamp show on the other.

It is offered in four diameters, from a 9.8 inch accent to a 19.6 inch centrepiece, all in Silver and all on a single drop.

The designer and the story

Filipe Lisboa began his career in Portugal, moved into lighting and founded Viso in 1999. Bolio is one of his designs, in a catalogue where simple geometry, metal and glass do most of the talking.

Singles over a console or bedside, pairs flanking a mirror, trios over a bar or island, and the large size on its own above a dining table or stair.

Who this is not for

Bolio is not a warm, diffuse light source; the transparent half shows the lamp, so choose a lamp you like looking at. It is also not meant for task lighting.

Who designed Bolio?

Bolio is credited to Filipe Lisboa, who founded Viso in 1999 after starting his career in Portugal.

What is the globe made of?

Viso describes Bolio as a globe that is half metallic and half transparent reflective. The finish offered here is Silver.

What does the light look like?

The transparent half exposes the lamp, so the character comes from the bulb you choose. A warm white lamp with an attractive filament or shape suits the exposed side best.

What does Bolio pair with?

Chrome, brushed steel, smoked mirror and pale stone suit the Silver finish. The reflective side also picks up colour from walls, so soft neutrals show well.

How should I clean it?

Our advice: let it cool, then wipe with a soft dry cloth; use a lightly damp cloth for fingerprints. Viso does not publish care instructions for Bolio.
