Bell is the full, rounded Scraplights shape, nearly as tall as it is wide, and in a cluster it fills a room with soft, generous light. Hang three on a slim linear canopy over a table, or gather three or five of mixed sizes on a round canopy for an entry or a stair. The Design Story

Cardboard is an everyday material, and Graypants set out to make it something else. Founders Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, Seattle architects who now run studios in Seattle and Amsterdam, began by turning scraps from found-material chairs into lights. Bell is one of the best proofs of that idea: the softly curved body shows none of the cardboard's humble origin until you get close and see the fine layered edges.

How It Is Made

The laser-cut layers of recycled corrugated cardboard are stacked and assembled by hand with non-toxic adhesive, then treated with a fire retardant. Cutting is done by machine for precision; the building is done by hand, which gives each shade its slightly individual shape. In a cluster, the Bell pendants hang from one aluminum canopy at different drops so their rounded forms overlap like soft lanterns.

You are commissioning a handmade fixture, not picking one off a shelf.

Not the Right Fit If

Bell clusters are made to order, so they are not the choice if you need lighting within days. The Bell shape is full and rounded rather than long and slim, so over a very long table you may prefer a linear canopy of three Bell 16. Dry, indoor locations only, and hand assembly means small differences from piece to piece.

Which Bell cluster is right for my space?

For a dining table or console, the linear canopy with 3 x Bell 10 or 3 x Bell 16 gives an orderly row. For an entry, stair or room center, the round canopy takes two Bell 10 plus one Bell 16 (three pendants) or three Bell 10 plus two Bell 16 (five pendants).

Do the Natural, White and Blonde clusters differ besides color?

Natural shows the warm brown of raw cardboard and uses a black canopy and black cord. White and Blonde use a white canopy and white cord. Shapes and sizes are the same in all three.

How tall is each Bell?

Bell 10 prints at 11 in (27.9 cm) diameter by 11 in high, and Bell 16 at 15 in (38.1 cm) diameter by 16 in (40.6 cm) high. The names Bell 10 and Bell 16 are model names, not exact diameters.

How is it installed and what is the drop?

It surface mounts with ceiling couplers (provided; ceiling anchors are not provided), or hangs from aircraft cable, which is provided. Standard drop to the bottom of the lowest pendant is 5 ft (152 cm) round and 3 ft (91 cm) linear, with custom drops available at extra cost and lead time.

What is the canopy size?

Linear: 43.25 x 5.25 x 2 in (109.9 x 13.3 x 5.1 cm). Round: 2 in (5.1 cm) deep. Three-pendant clusters are available on 15, 24 or 32 in (38, 61 or 81 cm) round canopies, and we show 24 in as standard. Graypants lists five-pendant clusters on a 32 in (81 cm) canopy, and some may fit on 24 in. We confirm the canopy size for your arrangement when you order.

How long is the lead time?

Bell clusters are made to order, about 6 weeks, and ship from the United States.
