Ausi is the small, glowing member of the Scraplights family, and in a cluster it becomes a canopy of light: three or five rounded cardboard pendants hung from a single ceiling plate at staggered heights. Choose a slim linear canopy for a dining table or console, or a round canopy for a stairwell, entry or open living room. It is sold complete, canopy, cords and pendants together, in Natural, White or Blonde.

The Design Story

Graypants began in Seattle with two architects, Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, and an unlikely material. Grizzle built a series of chairs from found cardboard, then took the scraps and made lights, and the lights stole the show. Ausi carries that origin in its softly rounded shape, and grouping several of them lets the layered cardboard read as a single sculptural gesture. The studio now works from Seattle and Amsterdam, and Ausi clusters are a natural way to give a room the scale a lone pendant cannot.

How It Is Made

Each Ausi shade is cut from recycled corrugated cardboard, layered and assembled by hand with non-toxic adhesive, and finished with a fire-retardant treatment. In a cluster, the three or five pendants hang from one aluminum canopy at different drops, so the glow builds in overlapping layers. Because the shades are hand-assembled, no two cluster arrangements look quite alike.

Ausi clusters are made to order, so they are not for projects that need lighting within days. The pendants are small and rounded, so for a very long table or a wide, double-height room, consider the five-pendant round arrangement or ask us about a custom layout. They are for dry, indoor locations only, and small variations in the hand-layered cardboard are part of their character.

Questions We Hear Most

Which cluster configuration should I choose?

The linear canopy (43.25 in long) suits a dining table, kitchen island or console; the round canopy suits an entry, stair or the center of a room. Three-pendant options come as 3 x Ausi 8, 3 x Ausi 12 or a mix of Ausi 8, 12 and 14 on the linear canopy, and as a mixed Ausi 8, 12 and 14 on the round canopy. The five-pendant round version combines two Ausi 8, two Ausi 12 and one Ausi 14.

What is the difference between Natural, White and Blonde?

Natural shows the warm brown of raw cardboard and comes with a black canopy and black cord. White is clean and bright, and Blonde is a soft pale tone; both come with a white canopy and white cord. The shapes and sizes are identical.

How is the cluster mounted and how long is the drop?

It surface mounts to the ceiling (couplers provided; ceiling anchors are not provided) or can hang from aircraft cable, which is provided. The standard drop from ceiling to the bottom of the lowest pendant is 5 ft (152 cm) on the round canopy and 3 ft (91 cm) on the linear canopy. A custom drop is available at extra cost and lead time.

How big is the canopy?

The linear canopy measures 43.25 x 5.25 x 2 in (109.9 x 13.3 x 5.1 cm). The round canopy is 2 in (5.1 cm) deep. Three-pendant clusters are available on 15, 24 or 32 in (38, 61 or 81 cm) round canopies, and we show 24 in as standard. Graypants lists five-pendant clusters on a 32 in (81 cm) canopy, and some may fit on 24 in. We confirm the canopy size for your arrangement when you order.

How long will it take to arrive?

Every Ausi cluster is made to order, with a lead time of about 6 weeks. It ships from the United States.

Can I use it in a bathroom or outdoors?

No. It is rated for dry, indoor locations only.
