Astep Model 548 Table Lamp by Gino Sarfatti – Dimmable LED

Model 548 is a lamp you watch as much as use: a small spotlight on a brass stem throws its light up onto a 500 mm screen, and the room fills with a glow that is part reflection, part translucence.

Gino Sarfatti drew it in 1951 as a study in balance. Astep, the company his grandson founded, re-edited it in 2013 with a dimmable LED, keeping every line of the original.

The Design Story

Sarfatti returned again and again to one idea: light seen through a screen. In Model 548 the screen is the lamp. A white aluminum spotlight sits on a tubular brass stem and aims at a large opaline disc, while a slim brass bar at the base holds the whole composition in balance. Nothing is hidden, and nothing is decoration for its own sake.

The touch dimmer lets it slide from a reading-corner glow down to a late-evening ember. And switched off, it still holds a console like a piece of mid-century sculpture.

Ours is wired at 120 V AC for North American homes, and the integrated LED means no bulbs to replace.
