Aprile is a wall lamp that washes the wall with a soft, grazing light, designed in 2017 for Penta by Nicola Gallizia.

It comes in 3 sizes (Small, Tall and Fatty) and 2 finishes: Matt White and Brushed Bronze, with a choice of 3000K or 2700K light.

The Design Story

Penta designs and makes its lamps by hand in Brianza, Italy. Penta describes Aprile as a luminous painting, able to make the walls vibrate with a delicate light, like the sun in spring. The light grazes the wall rather than lighting the room head-on, which turns plaster, stone or paint into a soft gradient. Its line for the collection is “Exploring the deep elegance of light.”

The Designer

Nicola Gallizia was born in Milan and studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic. From 1990 to 1999 he worked with Luca Meda on the image and products of Molteni and Dada, and he still works with them as a consultant on image and product development. Since 1999 he has been an art director and designer with the group Chamber, and in 2005 he opened his own studio, CZ36, in Milan, where he designs products and interiors. He has drawn several lamps for Penta, including Aprile and Narciso in 2017.

Penta designs and builds its lamps by hand in Brianza, Italy, and backs them with a 2-year manufacturer guarantee from the Auralis Group. Aprile has a metal structure, varnished matt white or finished in brushed bronze, and an integrated 13.5W LED.

Why You’ll Love It

What are the Aprile sizes?

Small is 11 in (28 cm) high, Tall is 23.6 in (60 cm) high and Fatty is 15.7 in (40 cm) high and 9.8 in (25 cm) wide. All three project about 3 in (8 cm) from the wall. The dimension drawings in the photos show each shape.

Should I choose 3000K or 2700K for Aprile?

Both are warm white. 3000K is a slightly clearer light; 2700K is softer and more golden. On a light wall either one gives a gentle grazing effect.

Is the bronze version dimmer than the white?

Penta lists 377 lumens for matt white and 251 lumens for brushed bronze with the same 13.5W LED. The bronze version therefore gives a more subdued glow.

Can Aprile be dimmed?

Yes. Penta lists it as dimmable with 0-10V or phase-cut dimmers; phase cut is for 120V only. Please check that your dimmer is compatible.

Can I replace the bulb in an Aprile?

The 13.5W LED is integrated into the lamp, so there is no bulb to buy or match.

Can Aprile be used in a bathroom?
