Allyn Pebble Pendant Light by Graypants Scraplights

Allyn is the round, middleweight pebble from the Graypants Scraplights Pebbles family: about 14 inches wide and 12.6 inches tall, built from laser-cut layers of recycled corrugated cardboard. Its proportions are nearly square, so it reads as a soft, full stone.

Natural, White and Blonde are available, and each Allyn is made to order by hand.

The Design Story

The Pebbles forms come from stones that Graypants gathered at three beaches near Seattle. Allyn takes the most balanced of those shapes: not flat like Alki, not tall like Denny, and not broad like Madison, but a calm, even form that suits almost any room.

It is designed in Seattle by Graypants, the studio of architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, and made in the United States. The studio lists Scraplights in the Baanmeesters project in Harderwijk, Netherlands, among others on its projects page.

How It Is Made

The profile of Allyn is cut layer by layer. A laser slices recycled corrugated cardboard into rings, numbers them for sorting and leaves the cut edges looking dark; hands then bond the rings with non-toxic adhesive, a non-toxic fire retardant is added, and the shade is wrapped in recycled paper.

Like every Scraplight, the shape starts in a 3D model and is then built up layer by layer.

Allyn is about 14.2 in wide and 12.6 in tall, which suits two to four feet above a table or counter. It hangs on a 6.5 ft (198 cm) cord from a 4.5 in canopy, in black or white. A 16 ft (488 cm) cord is available, and Graypants also offers custom cords and canopies.

One E26 socket takes an LED bulb up to 15W; Graypants recommends 2700K and does not include the bulb. Rated IP20, dry locations only. To clean, use a dry duster or compressed air; the shade is non-toxic and handmade.

Graypants' instructions call for a licensed electrician, power off and verified with a voltmeter, and a check for hidden wires before drilling. Choose a spot with room around the shade and out of direct sun, and keep the lamp at least 12 in (31 cm) from the canopy.
