Alki is the low, wide pebble in the Graypants Scraplights Pebbles family: a smooth, rounded pendant of laser-cut layers of recycled corrugated cardboard, about 12.6 inches across and only 7.5 inches tall. It hangs close and soft, which makes it the easiest Pebbles shade to use under a lower ceiling.

The Design Story

Pebbles is the newest chapter of Scraplights. Graypants took the forms from pebbles gathered at three beaches near Seattle, then translated those worn, rounded shapes into stacked cardboard. Alki is the flattest of the four, the stone you skip across the water.

Graypants is an architecture and product design studio founded by Seattle architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, with studios in Seattle and Amsterdam. Alki is designed in Seattle and made in the United States.

How It Is Made

Alki starts as a digital model of a pebble. A laser cuts each layer from recycled cardboard and numbers it, and the layers are glued one by one by hand with non-toxic adhesive. The shade then gets a non-toxic fire retardant and is wrapped in recycled paper for shipping.

Graypants builds Scraplights in its own workshop with skilled production associates, which is why you see the same care in the edge of a small Alki as in its largest shades.

Why You'll Love It

Alki weighs just 1.1 lb, the lightest of the Pebbles, and its short height means it never dominates a sight line. It is an easy way to add texture to a kitchen counter, a bedside, a hallway or a reading nook without crowding the room.

Cardboard might sound humble, but the layered, corrugated edges give a small shade a lot of character. Natural keeps the look of the material itself; White and Blonde give lighter options.

Made for Real Life

At about 12.6 in wide and 7.5 in tall, Alki can sit over a small table, a vanity, a pair of nightstands or a row along a counter. Three together at different drops make a relaxed cluster. It hangs on a 6.5 ft (198 cm) black or white cord, with a 16 ft (488 cm) cord available, from a 4.5 in canopy, and Graypants also offers custom cords and canopies.

Alki takes one E26 bulb, up to 15W LED, with 2700K warm white recommended; the bulb is not included. It is rated IP20, for dry locations only. To clean, use a dry duster or compressed air; the shade is non-toxic and handmade.

Alki is made to order, so it is not for a project that needs a pendant in a few days. It is for dry, indoor rooms. If you want a shade with some height, look at Denny; for a broad statement over a table, Madison is the larger Pebble.

Why is Alki shaped like a stone?

Where does Alki work best?

Its low height suits lower ceilings, kitchen counters, bedsides, hallways and entries. For more height, the Allyn and Denny pebbles are taller, and Madison is wider.

What is the difference between Natural, White and Blonde?

They are the same cardboard shape in three tones. Natural is the cardboard look, White and Blonde are lighter, and the photos on this page show each. Natural and White ship in about 2 weeks; Blonde takes about 3.

Is a bulb included?

No. Alki has one E26 socket for an LED bulb up to 15W, and Graypants recommends 2700K. Dimming depends on the bulb, so pair a dimmable LED with a compatible dimmer.

How long will mine take?

Alki is made to order. Natural and White take about 2 weeks, Blonde about 3 weeks.

Can I use Alki over a bathtub or outdoors?

No. It is rated IP20, for dry locations only. Clean it with a dry duster or compressed air.

Any installation tips for Alki?

Have a licensed electrician handle the ceiling wiring. Graypants recommends switching the power off and confirming with a voltmeter, then using a cable locator before drilling. Hang Alki away from direct sunlight, and keep at least 12 in (31 cm) between the lamp and the canopy.
