Runa is a suspension lamp with a smoked borosilicate dome that hides a linear glass structure inside, designed in 2023 for Penta by Marco Acerbis.
It comes in a matt bronze and smoked glass finish, with a choice of 0-10V dimmable, on-off or phase-cut dimmable control, and 3000K or 2700K light.
The Design Story
Runa is Penta’s new take on a lamp that reveals its inside when it is switched on, a legacy of the Penta collections in borosilicate. A classic smoky dome hides an elegant linear structure, also covered in borosilicate, that is the heart of the lamp and in turn reveals the light. The result is a play of reflections and cross-references of light. Penta designs and makes its lamps by hand in Brianza, Italy.
The Designer
Marco Acerbis was born in 1973 and studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. From 1997 to 2004 he lived and worked in London, where he collaborated with Foster + Partners on projects that included a research building for Imperial College. After returning to Italy he briefly joined Mario Bellini’s studio and then set up his own practice in architecture and design, working across many scales. His Vertigo lamp has been added to the permanent collection of the Vitra Design Museum. Runa is his 2023 design for Penta.

How It Was Made
Penta designs and builds its lamps by hand in Brianza, Italy, and backs them with a 2-year manufacturer guarantee from the Auralis Group. Runa’s dome is made of smoked borosilicate glass, and six arms covered with oxidized borosilicate glass sit on a matt bronze metal structure. Borosilicate expands only about a third as much as ordinary soda-lime glass when heated, withstands temperatures of about 500°C (932°F) and resists chemicals. Penta’s glassmakers work it by hand with powerful burners. The light source is an integrated 36W LED.

Why You’ll Love It
From below you see a calm smoky dome, and then the glass arms inside light up and the whole lamp comes alive. It is 17.7 in (45 cm) across and 9.1 in (23 cm) tall, a compact size for a lamp with this much presence.
