Vela is a wall sconce shaped like a sail that hides its own light source, designed in 2020 for Penta by BrogliatoTraverso.

The Design Story
Penta designs and makes its lamps by hand in Brianza, Italy. Vela is built on a simple, formal idea: the elegance of the shape hides the fixture. A sail with a timeless profile covers the light source and lets only a refined, indirect glow escape around its edge. Vela can live alone or be grouped in several lamps to make different compositions.
The Designers
Alberto Brogliato and Federico Traverso founded their design studio, BrogliatoTraverso, in 2014 after studying architecture and deepening their knowledge of glass blowing and traditional Japanese ceramics. Their motto is “No time, no space”: objects with a timeless design that adapt to different contexts. They have worked with Magis, Cappellini, Guzzini and Infiniti, and have won the Red Dot Design Award, the German Design Award, the iF Design Award and the Good Design Award.

How It Was Made
Penta designs and builds its lamps by hand in Brianza, Italy, and backs them with a 2-year manufacturer guarantee from the Auralis Group. Vela’s body is painted diecast aluminum in a matt finish, and the light source is an integrated 20W LED.

Why You’ll Love It
Vela is tall and slim, 15.9 in (40 cm) high, so it works like a column of soft light on the wall. You never see the LED, only its glow. The 20W LED has a CRI of 90 and puts out 1962 lumens, which is plenty for a wall light, and it is dimmable.

How big is the Vela sconce?

Does Vela show the light bulb?
No. The sail-shaped shade hides the LED and sends the light onto the wall, so the glow is indirect and there is no glare.
Should I choose 3000K or 2700K for Vela?
Both are warm white. 3000K gives a slightly clearer light, while 2700K is softer and more golden. Pick 2700K for bedrooms and lounges, or 3000K for halls and baths.
Can Vela be dimmed?
