The Wave Coffee Table captures the moment a wave builds to its peak. Four flowing laminations of timber curve, cross and lock together beneath a glass top, so the whole sculpture stays on view from above as well as from the side.
Alex MacMaster launched the Wave in 2014. It is made by hand to order in his Worcestershire workshop, in walnut or oak and in two sizes.
“Where timber becomes art.”
The Design Story
The design rests on two curves that mirror each other. Where they meet, they intersect and interlock into one solid base, with no visible fixings breaking the line. The movement of the timber follows the rise and roll of a wave, which is where the table takes its name.

Each lamination is birch plywood from FSC and PEFC certified forests, faced with American black walnut or American white oak veneer and bent by hand. The glass top lets the light fall through to the floor and shows off the interlocking curves underneath.
About the Designer
Alex MacMaster founded MacMaster Design in 2009 on a simple belief: that the objects we live with every day deserve the care usually kept for fine art. He works from a studio in the Worcestershire countryside, at The Guildings in Trimpley near Bewdley, and designs and builds each piece himself, from the first sketch to the final finish.
His work draws on Art Deco geometry, the organic forms of plants and flowers, and the quiet beauty of timber grain. Design, development, making and packing all happen under one roof, and offcuts from one range feed the next, so very little goes to waste. MacMaster pieces now light private homes, luxury hotels and flagship stores across the UK, Europe and beyond.
Why You'll Love It
The Wave is a coffee table you will catch yourself looking at. Seen from above, the curves sweep like brushstrokes under the glass; from the side, they rise and fall like water. It suits a contemporary room as naturally as a traditional one, and it adds movement to a living room without adding visual weight.
Where It's Best Placed
Both sizes stand 14 in high, a comfortable height in front of most sofas. The Large is 51 in long and 31.5 in wide, suited to a large sofa or an L-shaped seating group. The Small is 41 in long and 25 in wide, for a two- or three-seat sofa or a smaller living room. As a guide, leave about 16 to 18 in between the table edge and the sofa so legs and feet have room.

Questions We Hear Most
Who designed the Wave Coffee Table?
Alex MacMaster designed the Wave Coffee Table and launched it in 2014. He makes it by hand in Worcestershire, England.
How is the Wave Coffee Table base made?
The base is four laminations of timber, each a birch plywood core faced with walnut or oak veneer. Two curves mirror each other, and where they cross they interlock to form one solid unit that carries the glass top.
What sizes does the Wave Coffee Table come in?
The Large measures 51 in long, 31.5 in wide and 14 in high (130 x 80 x 35 cm). The Small measures 41 in long, 25 in wide and 14 in high (105 x 65 x 35 cm).
Which size of Wave Coffee Table suits my sofa?
Choose the Large for a long sofa or a sectional, and the Small for a two- or three-seat sofa. A coffee table about two-thirds the length of the sofa usually looks balanced.
Does the Wave Coffee Table suit a traditional room?
Yes. The flowing timber reads as sculpture rather than as a trend, and the glass top keeps it light, so it sits as easily beside period furniture as it does in a modern room.
How long does a handmade Wave Coffee Table take?
Every Wave is made to order by hand in Worcestershire, England. Allow about 6 to 12 weeks in the workshop, plus shipping time. Your table is shaped for you rather than taken from stock.
