Trace Free Fall Chandelier by CTO Lighting

Trace Free Fall is a vertical chandelier of curved bronze strands and shades of liquid cast glass that cascade down a stairwell, a hall or a double-height room, made by CTO Lighting of London. It comes with 5, 7 or 9 strands, from 90.6 in to 224.4 in tall.

It comes in 2 finishes: Antique Bronze and Bronze, each with liquid cast glass, and hangs from a ceiling rose.

The Design Story

Trace celebrates connection and scalability. CTO drew on the natural world and the work of sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, and each component is joined with care, which gives the whole piece an airy, delicate look. Curved metal strands carry shades of veiled glass that give a soft, diffused glow.

The Story of CTO Lighting

Chris and Clare Turner founded CTO Lighting in London in 1998 on one principle: design lights of uncompromising quality, using only the finest materials and working with elite British craftsmen. Chris is an engineer who designs and builds with meticulous detail, and Clare brings the eye of fashion. Together they built a name for understated luxury in hand-finished brass, mouth-blown glass and artisan-cut stone, and the collection has gone on to light The Savoy, The Dorchester, St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and Chiltern Firehouse.

How It Was Made

CTO assembles every light to order. Curved strands in antique bronze or bronze carry shades of liquid cast glass, which CTO also calls veiled glass. The glass comes from Italian glass workshops, where liquid opal is combined with the pulegoso technique: molten glass is poured into a steel mould, shaped by hand and annealed slowly, which gives it a semi-translucent, misty surface.

The Finishes

Antique Bronze. Rich, deep tones with a natural patina. Each fixture shows the character of the material and the hand of the British artisans who finish it.

Bronze. Deep, rich color and a robust build bring a touch of historical weight to a modern room, with a warm, inviting glow.

Liquid Cast Glass. Called veiled glass by CTO. Molten glass is poured at over 800 C into a steel mould, hand-shaped with softened edges and annealed slowly for 24 hours, giving a semi-translucent, mist-like surface.

Made for Real Life

The 110-130V versions have integrated LEDs at 2700K, 42W in the Free Fall 5, 58.8W in the 7 and 75.6W in the 9, dimmable with a trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimmer. They are heavy: 50.7 lb, 66.1 lb and 81.6 lb, so the ceiling fixing must carry the weight. Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and avoid abrasives.

CTO lists Trace Free Fall 5 at 53.1 in wide and 90.6 in high (1350 x 2300 mm), the 7 at 53.1 in wide and 137.8 in high (1350 x 3500 mm), and the 9 at 55.1 in wide and 224.4 in high (1400 x 5700 mm). The suspension cables are supplied cut to the drop you need.

Questions We Hear Most

Is Trace Free Fall dimmable?

Yes. CTO lists trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimming for the 110-130V versions. DALI and 0-10V control are listed only for 220-240V.

What do 5, 7 and 9 mean?

They are the number of cascading strands, according to CTO. The 5 is 90.6 in (2300 mm) high, the 7 is 137.8 in (3500 mm) and the 9 is 224.4 in (5700 mm). More strands make a taller, heavier chandelier.

How far does it hang?

The suspension cables are supplied cut to the drop you need. The minimum overall drop is 98.4 in (2500 mm) for the 5, 145.7 in (3700 mm) for the 7 and 232.3 in (5900 mm) for the 9.

What kind of canopy does it have?

Trace Free Fall hangs from a square ceiling rose, 21.7 in (550 mm) across and 2 in (50 mm) deep. The LED driver sits inside the rose. It is not offered with a ceiling plate.

How heavy is it?

The Free Fall 5 weighs 50.7 lb (23 kg), the 7 weighs 66.1 lb (30 kg) and the 9 weighs 81.6 lb (37 kg). Plan for a ceiling fixing that can carry it.

How do I clean it?

Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If a mark remains, use a slightly damp lint-free cloth, then dry it with a soft dry one. CTO advises against detergents and abrasive cleaners on metal and glass.
