The Globe 827 is the small size of Joe Colombo’s suspension lamp: a transparent blown-glass sphere that holds a cylindrical metal reflector, designed in 1964 for Oluce.
It comes in 2 finishes: Satin Nickel and Satin Gold.
The Design Story
Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, makes The Globe as a pendant in two sizes. The reflector inside the sphere gives direct light downward, and the transparent glass gives a soft, diffused glow around it. The sphere hangs from a black cable and a ceiling rose in satin nickel or anodic bronze, so the lamp reads as a clean shape in the air.
The Story
The Globe was designed by Joe Colombo in 1964 and made as a family of lamps in table, suspension and wall versions, in two sizes. The 827 is the small pendant and the 828 is the large one. Oluce also makes The Globe as a table lamp (228) and a wall lamp (727).
The Designers
Joe Colombo (1930 to 1971) is remembered as one of the great Italian designers of the postwar years, and he died at 41. Oluce describes his work as optimistic and forward looking. He designed complete living cells such as Visiona ’69 for Bayer, the compact Mini-Kitchen of 1963, the Bobby cart and Elda armchair of 1970 and the mp lamp of 1972, along with lamps for Oluce such as Spider, Coupé and Acrilica.
“Its pure geometries co-exist in a constant balance between shape and functionality”
Oluce, on The Globe by Joe Colombo
How It Was Made
The shade is a transparent blown-glass sphere, and the inner reflector, fittings and ceiling rose are metal. The finishes are satin nickel and satin gold. Oluce makes the lamp in Italy.

Why You’ll Love It
At 7.8 in across, The Globe 827 is easy to hang in a cluster, over a bedside table or above a small dining table. The glass picks up the room around it, and the reflector keeps the light clean and directed. It makes a light touch of design history for almost any ceiling.
Made for Real Life
The lamp takes one E12 bulb up to 40W, and the bulb is not included. Oluce notes that LED bulbs are compatible. The black cable hangs about 118 in (300 cm) from the ceiling. The US version is UL rated, and ceiling lamps should be installed by a qualified electrician. Wipe the glass with a soft dry cloth.
