Superluna is an LED table lamp with one rotating metal hemisphere on a slim black stem, designed by Victor Vasilev for Oluce in 2015.
It comes in 2 finishes: Black, and Anodized Brass, both with a black stem.
The Design Story
Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, built Superluna around the LED itself. The parts of the lamp are sized from the footprint of the light source, so a very technical light ends up with a calm, almost magical presence. A slender metal stem holds the LED and hides the electrical components. The light shines onto a semi-spherical shade that rotates on its own axis and reflects the light back into the room, which gives the soft, indirect glow the lamp is known for.
The Story
Superluna was Victor Vasilev’s debut project with Oluce. It began as a personal reflection on the work of Vico Magistretti and his ability to shape iconic forms that bring out the potential of the light source. Now that LED light has made it possible to reinvent a luminaire starting from its source, Vasilev drew a family of lamps with floor, table and wall versions. The rotating hemisphere is meant to echo the perpetual movement of celestial bodies around a small glowing core.
The Designer
Victor Vasilev was born in 1974 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and moved with his family to Israel at 15. He studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, then settled in Milan and opened his own practice in 2004. His work is driven by a steady search for clarity in form and material. Besides Oluce he has designed for Boffi, Living Divani, MDF Italia, Antrax and Falper.

How It Was Made
Superluna is made of metal. A slim metal stem carries the LED and conceals the wiring, and the semi-spherical shade turns on its own axis in front of the light source. Oluce makes the lamp in Italy.
Awards and Recognition
The Superluna lamp family won the German Design Award in 2018.

Why You’ll Love It

Made for Real Life
The 6.5W LED is built in and gives warm 3000K light at 650 lumens with a CRI above 85. There is no bulb to change. The lamp is UL listed for the US and works with a standard on/off switch; it is not dimmable. Wipe the metal with a soft dry cloth and avoid abrasive or solvent cleaners.
