Oliv Cluster Cardboard Pendant Light by Graypants

Oliv is the slim, egg-shaped shade of the Scraplights family, and this cluster hangs three of them from one round canopy. Each shade is about 7 in (17.8 cm) wide and 9 in (22.9 cm) tall, so the group stays graceful and light over a table, a bed or a stair landing.

The Design Story

Scraplights are where Graypants began: a few chairs built from found cardboard, and lights made from the scraps. Oliv carries that story in a very modest form, a single clean silhouette of layered recycled cardboard that lets the material do the talking. Graypants, the architecture and product design studio founded by Seattle architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, works from Seattle and Amsterdam.

Graypants shows its Oliv cluster in Blonde in its multi-pendant catalog, with three identical shades on a round canopy. Scraplights more broadly have lit projects including Pablo y Pablo in Seattle and Baanmeesters.

How It Is Made

The shade is a stack of recycled corrugated cardboard layers cut by laser, numbered for assembly and glued by hand with a non-toxic adhesive, then treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. The laser leaves a thin dark line on every edge, and that line traces the corrugation as the bulb lights it from inside.

Three shades are wired to one powder-coated aluminum canopy, so the cluster mounts at a single ceiling point.

Made for Real Life

The cluster hangs from a 24 in (61 cm) round canopy, 2 in (5.1 cm) deep, with a standard 5 ft (152 cm) drop from the ceiling to the bottom of the lowest pendant. A custom drop is available at extra cost and lead time. Each pendant is wired as on its single-pendant version: one E26 socket, up to 15W LED, 2700K warm white recommended, 120V (bulbs not included). Please have a qualified electrician plan the ceiling support.

Your Oliv cluster is made to order and assembled by hand, which is why every order is final sale. It is also why we love to help: if you want to talk through the drop, the finish or how it will look in your room, we are happy to do that before you order.

Not the Right Fit If

Oliv shades are small, so a single cluster is not meant to be the one big statement over a large table; for more scale, choose a cluster with larger pendants. It is made to order, so it is not for projects that need light within days, and it is for dry, indoor rooms only.

How big is the whole cluster?

Each Oliv shade is about 7 in (17.8 cm) wide and 9 in (22.9 cm) tall, and the three hang from a 24 in (61 cm) round canopy. The standard drop to the bottom of the lowest pendant is 5 ft (152 cm).

Does the Natural, White or Blonde finish change the canopy?

Yes. Natural comes with a black canopy and cord. White and Blonde come with a white canopy and cord.

What do the finishes look like lit?

Natural glows amber through the brown corrugation with dark outlines. White is paler and cleaner, and Blonde is a soft warm white with a burned edge.

Can the drop be longer or shorter?

A custom drop is available at extra cost and lead time. Tell us the ceiling height and the height you want over the table or bed, and we will check it with you before you order.

What bulbs does it take?

Each Oliv holds one E26 socket for an LED bulb of up to 15W, with 2700K warm white recommended. Bulbs are not included, and dimming depends on the bulb and the dimmer you choose.

How is it installed?

It surface mounts to the ceiling using the provided couplers, and Graypants also offers a version suspended on aircraft cable. Please have a licensed electrician install it, switch the power off first and check for hidden wires before you drill.

How long does it take to arrive?

Oliv clusters are made to order in about 6 weeks and ship from the United States.
