Nest Recycled Cardboard Pendant Light by Graypants

Nest is the tall one in the Graypants Scraplights angled-layer family: a column of laser-cut, recycled corrugated cardboard layers that lean against each other, 24 or 33 inches high, with a custom inner ring so the cord and bulb hang perfectly straight inside.

It is made for the spots where a round pendant feels too small: a stair void, an entry with a high ceiling, the end of a long table, or a pair flanking a console. Choose Natural, White or Blonde; every Nest is made to order by hand.

The Design Story

Where Hive stays compact, Nest stretches. Graypants lists the two together as the newer designs in the Scraplights Classic Series and notes they are the only Scraplights built with angled layers. Stretching that angled stack into a tall form gives Nest its slim, vertical profile.

Nest is designed in Seattle by Graypants, the architecture and product design studio started by architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker and now working from Seattle and Amsterdam. Scraplights appear in restaurants around Seattle, among them Plum Bistro on Capitol Hill and Pablo Y Pablo in Wallingford, according to the Graypants projects page.

How It Is Made

Every layer of a Nest is a laser-cut piece of post-consumer recycled cardboard, numbered by the laser so the stack goes together in the right order. Makers glue the layers by hand with non-toxic adhesive, add a non-toxic fire retardant, and wrap the finished shade in recycled paper.

Because the laser darkens the cut edges, the profile reads as fine lines, and the light comes through the corrugated walls as a soft, even glow.

Why You'll Love It

Nest is light for its height, only 1.5 lb for the 24 and 2.0 lb for the 32, so a tall fixture does not need heavy support. It brings vertical drama to a room without glass, metal or a heavy canopy.

Nest 24 is about 9.5 in wide and 24 in tall, which makes it a slim accent for a corner, a bar end or a narrow stairwell. Nest 32 is 13 in wide and about 33.5 in tall, a better fit above a long dining table or in a double-height entry. Plan the drop as the cord plus the shade: the standard cord is black or white and 6.5 ft (198 cm), and Graypants also lists a 16 ft (488 cm) cord for very high ceilings, plus custom cords and canopies.

Each Nest takes one E26 bulb, up to 15W LED, with 2700K warm white recommended; the bulb is not included. It is rated IP20, for dry locations only. To clean, use a dry duster or compressed air; the shade is non-toxic and handmade.

Not the Right Fit If

Nest is made to order, so it is not the answer if you need a fixture this week. It is for dry, indoor rooms, and its tall shape needs ceiling height: in a room under 8 ft, a Hive or one of the lower Pebbles shades is a better match.

How tall is Nest, and how much drop does it need?

Nest 24 is about 24 in (62 cm) tall and Nest 32 is about 33.5 in (85 cm) tall. Add the cord you need above it: the standard cord is 6.5 ft (198 cm). Hanging it so the bottom of the shade clears head height by a comfortable margin is the usual rule.

Which Nest size is right for my space?

Nest 24 is about 9.5 in wide and suits corners, narrow stairwells and the end of a bar. Nest 32 is 13 in wide and has more presence over a long table or in a taller entry.

Can I hang a Nest with a Hive?

Yes. Graypants photographs Nest and Hive together in a cluster. Both use the same angled-layer construction, so the shapes read as a family.

Does the Nest include a bulb, and can it be dimmed?

No bulb is included. Nest takes one E26 bulb, up to 15W LED, with 2700K recommended. Dimming depends on the bulb, so pair a dimmable LED with a compatible dimmer.

Can I get a longer cord?

How long will a Nest take?

Nest is made to order. Natural and White finishes take about 2 weeks and the Blonde finish about 3 weeks.

What should I know before installing it?

Graypants advises a licensed electrician for the ceiling wiring, switching the power off and testing it with a voltmeter, and checking for hidden wires before you drill. Keep it away from direct sunlight and leave at least 12 in (31 cm) between the lamp and the canopy. Rated IP20, dry locations only.
