Moon Cardboard Pendant Light by Graypants Scraplights

Moon is the full, rounded pendant in the Scraplights Classic family, and one of the two designs Graypants names as best-sellers. Its printed height is close to its width in every size, so it reads as a soft globe of light rather than a flat shade, from the compact Moon 10 to the 32 in (81.3 cm) Moon 32.

It is made from recycled corrugated cardboard, cut by laser and assembled by hand, in Natural, White and Blonde. Hang one over a bedside, group three over a bar, or let a Moon 24 fill the volume of a stair hall.

The Design Story

Moon belongs to Scraplights, the first collection from Graypants, the architecture and product design studio founded in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker. The studio works from Seattle and Amsterdam, and it credits Moon to Graypants Studio as a whole.

Scraplights grew from a simple practice: use a humble, recycled material, shape it with precise digital tools and finish it by hand. Moon is one of the clearest expressions of that idea, with a round form that shows off the layered construction when it is lit.

How It Is Made

Each Moon starts as a digital model that becomes a set of cut files. A laser cuts every layer from recycled corrugated cardboard and etches a number on it, so the stack can be assembled in order, and the beam leaves a darkened edge that shows through as a fine outline.

The layers are then glued together by hand with a non-toxic adhesive, the shade is treated with a non-toxic fire retardant, and it is wrapped in recycled paper for shipping. The larger the Moon, the more layers there are to see when the bulb is on.

Every Moon comes with a 6.5 ft (2 m) cord and a 4.5 in powder-coated canopy; 16 ft (5 m) and 26 ft (8 m) cords and custom cords and canopies are available on request. Size matters here, so check the printed dimensions below: Moon 10 is about 10.2 in (26 cm) across and 8.7 in (22 cm) tall, and Moon 32 is about 31.9 in (81 cm) across and 29.1 in (74 cm) tall. Not the Right Fit If

Moon is a full, rounded shade, so it takes up real volume, especially in the larger sizes. It is not the best choice for a low ceiling or a very narrow spot, and Moon 32 and every Blonde are made to order, so they are not right if you need a light within days. It is for dry indoor rooms only.

Which Moon size should I choose?

Moon 10 and 14 suit bedsides, hallways and groups. Moon 18 works over a small table or in an entry. Moon 24 and 32 are focal pieces for large dining tables, stair halls and tall living rooms.

What are the dimensions of each Moon?

Moon 10 is 10.2 in across and 8.7 in tall. Moon 14 is 14.2 by 12.2 in, Moon 18 is 17.7 by 15.7 in, Moon 24 is 24 by 20.9 in, and Moon 32 is 31.9 by 29.1 in (diameter by height).

What is the difference between the three finishes?

Natural shows the brown cardboard with dark laser-cut edges. White is bright and clean. Blonde is a warm white with a burned edge.

Can I hang several Moons together?

Yes, Graypants photographs Moon in clusters above a bar and in a studio. Each pendant has its own cord and canopy, so you will need a ceiling point for every one. Mixing sizes at different heights gives a layered look.

What should I know before installing it?

Graypants advises having a licensed electrician handle the ceiling wiring, turning the power off and testing it first, and checking for hidden wires before drilling. Keep the fixture out of direct sunlight and leave at least 12 in (31 cm) between the lamp and the canopy. Clean with a dry duster or compressed air.
