Midrand Crystal 19 Table Lamp by Sean Lavin for Visual Comfort

The Midrand Crystal 19 Table Lamp by Sean Lavin is a slim brass lamp drawn in a single right angle: a thin upright post rises from a flat base, turns at the top and carries a conical brass cap over a faceted crystal diffuser. It stands 18.6 inches tall and 13.6 inches wide, plugs into a wall outlet with a 72 inch cord, and has an integrated LED with a three-step touch dimmer.

It comes in Hand-Rubbed Antique Brass or Bronze, and at 8 lbs it is easy to move from room to room.

The Design Story

Sean Lavin designs lighting by working with light, form and material, drawing on art, architecture, travel and technology. Visual Comfort says the Midrand collection takes its inspiration from the conical silhouette of the Grand Central Water Tower near Johannesburg, South Africa. The collection is built from geometric, streamlined metal forms paired with crystal diffusers for a soft, inviting glow. In this lamp the tower becomes a small cone of brass, the structure is reduced to a line, and the crystal below it does the glowing.

Why You'll Love It

It takes up almost no visual space. The lamp is mostly air, so it sits on a narrow desk, a bedside table or a crowded console without making it feel busier. The light hangs over the surface instead of pooling in the middle of the table, and the crystal softens it into a warm 2700K, 90 CRI glow that is flattering on skin, books and wood. The built-in three-step touch dimmer means no cord switch to fumble for.

Built to Last

The structure is solid brass with a crystal diffuser. It is ETL listed and rated for indoor, dry locations only. Visual Comfort backs it with a five-year warranty. The LED is built in and rated at 50,000 hours to L70, so there is no bulb to change. The flat base holds the post steady, and the cord exits at the back of the base.

Where It Shines

On a desk, a narrow console, a nightstand, a bookshelf or a window-side table, and in a small apartment where every inch of surface counts.

Who This Is Not For

Midrand is a soft accent lamp. At 258 lumens it adds a warm, low glow rather than the bright light of a task lamp, so it will not light a large room or replace a full reading lamp. The shade is fixed in place, so the light cannot be aimed. It is rated for indoor, dry locations only.

Questions We Hear Most

Can I dim it?

Yes. A built-in three-step touch dimmer sets the level. The lamp has no separate switch on the cord.

Can I replace the bulb?

No. The LED module is integrated and rated for 50,000 hours to L70, so there is no bulb to replace.

Can I adjust the angle of the light?

No. The arm and shade are fixed, and the light shines down from the end of the arm.

Can I use it outside?

No. Its spec sheet lists an indoor only, dry location rating.

How much room does it need?

The base is 5 inches deep, and the whole lamp is 13.6 inches wide, with the diffuser hanging out over the surface at one end.

Which finish should I choose?

Hand-Rubbed Antique Brass is warm and soft and sits well with wood and linen. Bronze is darker and more graphic, and looks sharp against pale walls.

Why We Love It

It is a lamp reduced to a line and a point, and the crystal tip carries all of the glow.
