The Midrand 19 Table Lamp by Sean Lavin is a table lamp reduced to a line and a cone: a slim steel post rises from a flat rectangular base, turns a right angle and ends in a solid conical shade. It stands 18.6 inches tall and 13.6 inches wide, plugs into a wall outlet with a 72 inch cord, and has an integrated LED with a three-step touch dimmer.
It is finished in Nightshade Black and weighs only 5 lbs.
The Design Story
Sean Lavin designs lighting by working with light, form and material, drawing on art, architecture, travel and technology. Visual Comfort says the Midrand collection finds its inspiration in the conical silhouette of the Grand Central Water Tower near Johannesburg, South Africa, with geometric, streamlined forms in metal that give an unexpectedly soft and inviting glow. Midrand 19 is the all-black version: no crystal, no ornament, only the cone and the line that holds it.
Why You'll Love It
It is the quietest lamp in the Midrand family and the easiest to place. The black steel disappears against a dark wall and draws a clean graphic line against a pale one, and the solid cone throws a focused pool of warm 2700K, 90 CRI light down onto the surface below. The built-in three-step touch dimmer sets the mood, and the narrow frame leaves room on a crowded desk or nightstand.
Built to Last
The lamp is made of steel in a Nightshade Black finish. It is ETL listed and rated for indoor, dry locations only. Visual Comfort backs it with a five-year warranty. The LED is built in and rated at 50,000 hours to L70, so there is no bulb to change. At 5 lbs it is light enough to move easily, and the flat base keeps it steady on a table.

Where It Shines
On a desk, a nightstand, a narrow console, a bookshelf or a side table beside a chair, and anywhere a dark, minimal lamp suits the room.
Who This Is Not For
Midrand 19 is a soft accent lamp. At 246 lumens it gives a warm, low pool of light rather than the output of a bright task lamp, so it will not light a large room. The shade is solid and fixed in place, so the light cannot be aimed. It is rated for indoor, dry locations only.
Questions We Hear Most
Can I dim it?
Yes. A built-in three-step touch dimmer sets the level. The lamp has no separate switch on the cord.
Can I replace the bulb?
No. The LED module is integrated and rated for 50,000 hours to L70, so there is no bulb to replace.
Can I adjust the angle of the light?
No. The arm and shade are fixed, and the light shines down from under the cone.
Can I use it outside?
No. Its spec sheet lists an indoor only, dry location rating.
How is it different from Midrand Crystal 19?
It has the same size and shape, but it is made of black steel with a solid cone shade. The Crystal version adds a brass or bronze finish with a faceted crystal diffuser.
How much room does it need?
The base is 5 inches deep, and the whole lamp is 13.6 inches wide, with the cone hanging out over the surface at one end.
Why We Love It
It is a lamp stripped down to a line and a cone, in matte black.
