Drawn by Tayfur Ozkaynak for sohoConcept, the Martini Baba Wood Counter or Bar Stool treats a stool as something to be looked at as much as used, built around an upholstered seat on solid wood legs. The construction is contract grade, so it is as suited to a busy restaurant as to a dining room.

The Design Story

Since 2000, sohoConcept has worked from one idea: strip a piece back to what matters, then build it to last. That clean-lined language is equally at home in a residence or a hotel; the studio's furniture has been specified for W Hotels New York, Aloft Brooklyn and the Delta Hotels in Toronto.

Inside, the stool is built on a steel frame with S-shaped springs, molded injected polyurethane foam. The base is solid wood, teak in a black wenge finish or natural sungkai in an oak finish. Each one is made in Türkiye. Tayfur Ozkaynak designed the Martini for sohoConcept and offers the one silhouette on a choice of bases and heights, so the same design can carry from a dining room to a kitchen counter or a lounge.

About the Designer

Tayfur Ozkaynak designed many of the chairs and stools in the sohoConcept collection. The Martini Baba Wood Counter or Bar Stool is one of them, and, like his other work for the studio, it pairs a carefully shaped seat with a choice of bases and heights so a single silhouette can run through a whole project.

Living With It

Clean leather-look and leather seats with a soft, slightly damp cloth and a little mild soap, then dry them. Vacuum woven fabrics with a soft brush attachment and blot spills straight away; never rub. Keep wood away from direct heat and sun, and dust it with a dry cloth. Wipe metal with a dry microfiber cloth; skip scouring pads.
