Lineal begins with a sentence: a straight line is the shortest distance between two points. Gabriel Teixidó turned that idea into a wall light that reads as a line suspended in space.
It is subtle and minimalist, yet gives a pleasant, powerful light.
The Design Story
Teixidó designed Lineal in 2012 for Carpyen. An aluminum profile gives it its lightness, and an integrated LED supplies 2700 K light with a 120 degree spread. It comes in four lengths, 40 cm (15.7 in), 62 cm (24.4 in), 86 cm (33.9 in) and 110 cm (43.3 in), each only 10 cm (3.9 in) high. Finishes are black, nickel and white. The maker says it suits residential and professional spaces alike.
About the Designer
Gabriel Teixidó was born in Barcelona in 1947 and trained at the city's School of Applied Arts and Artistic Trades. A freelance industrial designer since 1970, he calls himself a “fairly industrial” designer: his work avoids fashion and showmanship in favor of formal restraint and quiet usefulness. He won SIDI awards for the Bolero chair in 1986 and for the Columba lamp, made by Carpyen, in 1987, and has received the ADI-FAD Delta de Plata several times.
What interests me is that my designs are useful, that people feel comfortable with them, that they are a help.
Why You'll Love It
Lineal has the discipline of a drawn line, and it behaves that way on a wall. You can run one long piece above a sofa, or place a short one at a bed. The light is warm and even, so the wall becomes part of the glow. Because there is little to the form, it does not date.
Where It's Best Placed
Lineal belongs above a bed or a sofa, along a corridor, or over a desk. It is made for indoor, dry spaces.
