The Iris Floor Light is where MacMaster began. Alex MacMaster bends thin laminations of oak or walnut into tall, arching leaves and gathers them at the base like a bunch of irises. Light rises inside the leaves and spills warm shadows onto the walls around it, so the lamp reads as sculpture by day and as a soft glow by night.
It is one of the founding designs of the MacMaster range, launched in 2010, and is still made by hand to order in Alex's Worcestershire workshop in two heights.
“Where timber becomes art.”
The Design Story
Each leaf is formed from curved laminations of timber that echo the long, tapering blade of an iris leaf. Set together, the leaves give the lamp a structure that feels both ordered and alive, closed at the foot and opening as it rises.

The bulb sits low inside the form, so light graduates upward along the inner faces of the leaves. Some of it escapes through the gaps and lands on nearby walls as soft lines of shadow, which makes the room around the lamp feel deeper. Every leaf is a birch plywood core from FSC and PEFC certified forests, faced with American white oak or American black walnut veneer, and finished in the workshop by hand.
About the Designer
Alex MacMaster founded MacMaster Design in 2009 on a simple belief: that the objects we live with every day deserve the care usually kept for fine art. He works from a studio in the Worcestershire countryside, at The Guildings in Trimpley near Bewdley, and designs and builds each piece himself, from the first sketch to the final finish.
His work draws on Art Deco geometry, the organic forms of plants and flowers, and the quiet beauty of timber grain. Design, development, making and packing all happen under one roof, and offcuts from one range feed the next, so very little goes to waste. MacMaster pieces now light private homes, luxury hotels and flagship stores across the UK, Europe and beyond.
Why You'll Love It
It is a light you notice even when it is switched off: a tall, natural silhouette that gives a corner real presence. When it is on, the glow is warm and indirect, the kind of light that makes a living room feel calm in the evening. The oak version is pale and fresh, while walnut brings depth and a richer, darker grain. Because each lamp is built by hand, no two leaves have quite the same figure in the wood, so yours is truly your own.
Where It's Best Placed
Give the Iris a corner or a wall it can wash with light: beside a sofa, at the end of a hallway, flanking a window or a fireplace. The Large, at 75.6 in tall, suits rooms with generous ceilings and stairwells; the Small, at 62.5 in, sits comfortably in a bedroom or a smaller living room. A matched pair either side of a window or doorway is a striking way to use it.
In Owners' Words
Interior designer Hazel Bird of Aitch Design chose Iris Floor Lights for a calm room in a contemporary home and says they became “the focal point to the room.”
Irene and Barna told the workshop their Iris is “the absolute centre of attention in our house.”
Another owner, Karen, notes that a friend keeps the larger version in her hallway, where every visitor stops to look.

Questions We Hear Most
Who designed the Iris Floor Light, and when?
Alex MacMaster designed the Iris Floor Light, and it launched in 2010. It is one of the founding designs of the MacMaster range, made in his workshop in Worcestershire, England.
How do the oak and walnut finishes differ?
Oak is pale and honey-toned with a lively grain that suits light, Scandinavian-leaning rooms. Walnut is darker and warmer, with a deeper figure that suits richer palettes. Both are real timber veneers over a certified birch plywood core, so the grain varies a little from lamp to lamp.
What kind of light does the Iris give?
It gives a warm, indirect ambient light. The bulb sits low inside the leaves, so light climbs the inner faces of the timber and casts soft lines of shadow on nearby walls. It is mood and accent lighting rather than a reading light.
Should I choose the Large or the Small?
The Large stands 75.6 in (192 cm) tall and 15.7 in (40 cm) across, and suits high ceilings, stairwells and open-plan rooms. The Small stands 62.5 in (159 cm) tall and 14 in (35 cm) across, and fits bedrooms and smaller living rooms. Both share the same leaf design.
Is the Iris Floor Light wired for the United States?
Yes. It is supplied for 120 V with an E26 lampholder, a 59 in (1.5 m) black fabric cord and a foot switch, using CE/UL rated components. Use an LED bulb of up to 20 W; the bulb is not included.
How long does a handmade Iris take to arrive?
Each Iris is made to order by hand in Worcestershire, England. Allow about 6 to 12 weeks for your lamp to be shaped, assembled and finished in the workshop, plus shipping time to you. It is worth the wait: the lamp is made for you, not pulled from a shelf.
