Gaia is a wall light with a round glass shade on a slim rectangular arm, made by CTO Lighting of London. This tall version stands 13.8 in high and 5.9 in wide, and you can mount it facing up or down.
It comes in 2 finishes, Satin Brass and Bronze, and 4 glass shades: Matt Opal, Shiny Opal, Smoked and Hand-Formed Smoked.
The Design Story
Gaia takes its inspiration from the Art Deco period, when refined, sleek lines heralded a new era of glamour and modernity. CTO engineers it with precision so that the light projects from the wall with clean, rectangular metalwork and as few visible fixings as possible. Its compact size suits almost any interior and is especially good in narrow spaces.
The Story of CTO Lighting
Chris and Clare Turner founded CTO Lighting in London in 1998 on one principle: design lights of uncompromising quality, using only the finest materials and working with elite British craftsmen. Chris is an engineer who designs and builds with meticulous detail, and Clare brings the eye of fashion. Together they built a name for understated luxury in hand-finished brass, mouth-blown glass and artisan-cut stone, and the collection has gone on to light The Savoy, The Dorchester, St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and Chiltern Firehouse.
How It Was Made
CTO assembles every light to order in England. The rectangular metalwork is finished in satin brass or bronze, and CTO describes the glass shades as handblown. You choose between matt opal, shiny opal, smoked and hand-formed smoked glass, and you can mount the shade facing up or down.
The Finishes
Satin Brass. Warm golden tones and a brushed, satin surface give a soft sheen that feels luxurious but understated. CTO selects the metal for its durability and beauty.
Bronze. Deep, rich color and a robust build bring a touch of historical weight to a modern room, with a warm, inviting glow.
Matt Opal Glass. Opal glass has a soft translucency that diffuses the light evenly and hides the bulb.
Shiny Opal Glass. Opal glass has a soft translucency that diffuses the light evenly and hides the bulb, with a smooth, glossy surface.
Smoked Glass. A smokey tint softens the light output and gives a warm, diffused, atmospheric glow, with small variations in shape and color from piece to piece.
Hand-Formed Smoked Glass. Smoked glass shaped by hand, so the outline of each shade varies a little. The tint softens the light and gives a warm, diffused glow.
Why You’ll Love It
Gaia is a small, graceful accent for a bedside, a hallway or a narrow wall. Mount it facing up for a glow that washes the wall, or down for a pool of light, and pick the glass to set the mood: opal for a soft globe, smoked for a warmer, moodier glow.
Made for Real Life
The 110-130V version takes one E12 bulb, up to 25W or a 4.5W LED at 2700K, and CTO requires a dimmable bulb for dimming on a trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimmer. CTO does not list a bulb as supplied. It weighs 3.3 lb, and it is IP20 for dry indoor rooms. Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and use a slightly damp cloth for marks. Skip detergents and abrasives.
Size in Inches

Questions We Hear Most
Is Gaia Wall Tall dimmable?
Yes, with a dimmable bulb. CTO lists a trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimmer for the 110-130V version and DALI only for 220-240V.
What bulb does it take?
One E12 bulb, up to 25W or a 4.5W LED at 2700K. CTO does not list a bulb as supplied.
Can I mount it facing up or down?
Yes. CTO says both Gaia versions can be mounted with the shade facing up or down.
What are the glass options?
Matt opal and shiny opal give a soft, even globe. Smoked glass has a warm tint, and hand-formed smoked glass has a gently irregular outline because it is shaped by hand.
What is the difference between Gaia and Gaia Tall?
Both are 5.9 in (150 mm) wide. Gaia is 7.2 in (183 mm) high and Gaia Tall is 13.8 in (350 mm) high, with a longer arm.
How do I clean it?
Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If a mark remains, use a slightly damp lint-free cloth, then dry it with a soft dry one. CTO advises against detergents and abrasive cleaners on metal and glass.
Why We Love It
Gaia is a neat, glamorous little light: a clean line of metal and a globe of glass.
