FontanaArte Pinecone Table Lamp

The Pinecone table lamp by Paola Navone for FontanaArte is a caged blown-glass lamp: a frosted glass diffuser held in a glossy metal cage, in transparent or white glass with a chrome or gold cage. It comes in two sizes, Medium and Large.

The diffuser is manufactured using the ancient caged blown glass technique: the glass maker blows the molten glass blob into a metal cage, which only partly contains the blob's natural expansion. In this way, the glass surface is partly trapped by and partly escapes the cage, generating an impression of tension as the object struggles to free itself from its harness.

The Design Story

Paola Navone designed Pinecone in 2016 as a suspension and table lamp. The cage is further enriched by a galvanic treatment that makes it look glossy and brilliant. In the transparent version the glass reveals a two-fold structure that multiplies the scenic effect, and the metal cage pattern projects kaleidoscopic shade effects on the surrounding surfaces. In the white version the glass delicately envelops the cage surface and enhances its geometric pattern, generating an elegant and visually pleasing diffused light. FontanaArte says the lamp makes a highly appealing and striking impact either switched on or off.

About the Designer

Paola Navone is an architect, product designer, interior decorator and art director, and a creator of exhibitions and events around the world. FontanaArte describes her as straightforward, a dreamer and eclectic: her mind and soul combine the flavours and colours of the South of the world with the taste and forms of the West, in constant search of matters and materials, forms and structures.

In 1983 she won the Osaka International Design Award. She was Designer of the Year in 2000 for the magazine Architektur & Wohnen, won the Elle Deco International Design Awards for two projects in 2011, and was inducted into Interior Design Magazine's Hall of Fame in 2014. She has worked, and still collaborates, with most of the major companies of the international and Italian design world.

Frequently Asked Questions: FontanaArte Pinecone Table Lamp by Paola Navone

Who designed the FontanaArte Pinecone table lamp?

The FontanaArte Pinecone table lamp was designed by Paola Navone in 2016, alongside a suspension version. Navone is an architect, product designer, interior decorator and art director; FontanaArte describes her as straightforward, a dreamer and eclectic, blending the colours of the South of the world with the forms of the West.

What makes the glass of the Pinecone table lamp special?

The FontanaArte Pinecone table lamp uses the ancient caged blown glass technique. Molten glass is blown into a metal cage that only partly contains it, so the frosted glass swells out between the bars. FontanaArte says the result gives an impression of tension, as the object struggles to free itself from its harness.

How big is the FontanaArte Pinecone table lamp?

The Pinecone table lamp comes in Medium and Large. The Medium measures 11.8 in (30.0 cm) in diameter and 14.2 in (36.1 cm) high. The Large size is shown, with all dimensions, in the technical drawing in the image gallery.

Which finishes does the Pinecone table lamp come in?

Each size of the FontanaArte Pinecone table lamp is offered in four combinations: White or Transparent glass with a Chrome or Gold cage. Transparent glass lets the cage cast kaleidoscopic shade effects on nearby surfaces, while White glass wraps the cage and gives a softer, diffused glow that highlights its geometric pattern.

What bulb does the Pinecone table lamp take?

The FontanaArte Pinecone table lamp takes one E26 bulb, up to 116 W, at 110 V, rated IP20. The bulb is not included. The frosted blown glass diffuser fully encloses the bulb, so the light reads as a glow through the glass rather than a bare source.

Is the FontanaArte Pinecone table lamp dimmable, and what plug does it have?

Yes. The Pinecone table lamp has diffused, dimmable light, and the dimmer is included on its transparent power cable. It is supplied with a U.S. plug, so it is ready to plug into a standard outlet on a side table, console or nightstand.

Where does the Pinecone table lamp work in an interior?

The FontanaArte Pinecone table lamp makes a sculptural accent on a side table, console, sideboard or bedside table, and FontanaArte notes its striking impact whether switched on or off. Its craft glass and glossy cage suit eclectic, contemporary and classic Italian rooms. It is made in Italy.
