The FontanaArte Parola Floor Lamp, designed by Gae Aulenti and Piero Castiglioni in 1980, is a dimmable floor lamp that combines three kinds of glass working: blown glass, natural glass and natural crystal. It stands 61 inches high and comes in Amber and White.
“It is an exemplary model of technical integration between artisan and industrial skills.”
The Design Story
Gae Aulenti and Piero Castiglioni designed the Parola in 1980. The maker describes the lamp as featuring three different glass working processes: blown glass, natural glass and natural crystal. On the floor version, a borosilicate glass frame with a base connection in chromed metal rises from a transparent bevelled glass base and carries a coloured diffuser of glossy, blown glass paste.
About the Designers
Gae Aulenti graduated in 1953 from the Politecnico di Milano and began her career in Milan in 1956, working in architecture, interior and industrial design and theatre scenography. In 1979 she became artistic director of FontanaArte, where she designed the Giova lamp (1964) and, with Piero Castiglioni, the Parola collection (1980). Her architectural work includes the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou and Palazzo Grassi. Her awards include Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, Honorary FAIA and the Praemium Imperiale.
Pietro Maria Castiglioni, known as Piero, graduated in architecture in Milan in 1970 and has worked almost exclusively in lighting design for homes, galleries, museums, hotels, offices and public spaces. He has taught at the University of Geneva, the Domus Academy and the Polytechnic of Milan. FontanaArte has produced his Scintilla system since 1983. His lighting design for architecture includes the Musée d’Orsay (1986), Palazzo Grassi (1986), the Centre Pompidou (2001) and the Roman Forum (2012).
