The Design Story

Gio Ponti designed the original Bilia in 1932, the year he founded FontanaArte with Pietro Chiesa. The Portable version, dated 2026, keeps the balance of sphere and cone and makes it wireless.

About the Designer

Gio Ponti was an architect, painter, graphic artist and set designer. He graduated from Milan Polytechnic in 1920 and in 1926 founded the magazine Domus with editor Gianni Mazzocchi, staying on as editor until his death. He took over the art direction of Luigi Fontana in 1931 and in 1932 founded FontanaArte with Pietro Chiesa. He helped promote the Compasso d'Oro Award, was a founding member of ADI, and taught at Milan Polytechnic. His buildings include the Pirelli skyscraper in Milan, Taranto Cathedral and Villa Planchart in Caracas. For FontanaArte he created the 0024, Bilia, Pirellina and Pirellone lamps and the Tavolino 1932 table, some of which are still in production.
