Float Cardboard Pendant Light by Graypants

Float is a wide, low disc of laser-cut recycled cardboard that seems to hover under the ceiling, glowing softly through its stacked layers. It comes in three sizes, 36, 48 and 60 in, and three finishes, Natural, White and Blonde, so you can hang one over a dining table, a row over a kitchen island, or a single grand disc in a lobby.

The Design Story

Graypants began in Seattle with two architects, Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, and an unlikely material. Grizzle built a series of chairs from found cardboard, then turned the scraps into lights, and the lights stole the show. Float is designed by Graypants Studio and carries that first idea into a lighter, wider form: cardboard that has been turned into something you would not recognize as cardboard.

How It Is Made

Each layer of recycled cardboard is cut with precision, then assembled by hand with non-toxic adhesive. The stacked edges catch the light in fine, shifting lines, which is why a Float looks different by day and by night, and why no two are exactly alike. Grizzle calls the process a "high-tech, low-tech scenario": computers for the design, human hands for the assembly.

The shallow profile keeps sightlines open, so it suits low ceilings, open plans and big rooms alike, and the integrated LED gives an even, warm glow with no bulbs to choose or replace. It dims smoothly on a 0-10V dimmer, so it can move from bright to candlelit through the evening. Cardboard does not fade or peel, and a light dusting is all it needs. Float has an integrated 29W LED that delivers 1485 lumens at CRI 90, in 2700K or 3000K warm white. It runs on 110-277V, dims with a 0-10V dimmer and hangs from a black or white 10 ft cord, with custom lengths available. Graypants lists the fixture as ETL Recognized, and the pendant is rated for dry locations. Please have a qualified electrician plan the ceiling support. To clean, use a dry duster or compressed air.

Which size should I choose?

The 36 in (about 34 in across) suits a dining table or entry, the 48 in (about 50 in across) fits a long table or kitchen island, and the 60 in (about 58 in across) is a statement piece for large rooms and lobbies.

What is the difference between Natural, White and Blonde?

Natural shows the warm brown of raw cardboard, White is clean and bright, and Blonde is a soft, pale tone. The shapes and sizes are the same.

Does Float need bulbs?

No. It has an integrated 29W LED (1485 lumens, CRI 90) in 2700K or 3000K warm white, so there are no bulbs to buy or replace.

Can I dim it?

Yes. Float dims on a 0-10V dimmer.

How long will it take to arrive?
