Stork Mobile Large in Natural Wood by Eguchi Toys – New-Baby Stork

Stork Mobile Large, Wood by Eguchi Toys is a storybook stork, cloth bundle in its beak, carved in natural, unpainted pine. Pull the leather strap and the wings beat slowly, as if it has just arrived with good news.

Eguchi Toys designs its flying birds as home pieces that delight adults and children alike, so it belongs as much over a sofa as over a crib. The Mobile Birds series won a Golden Pin Design Award and a Cultural and Creative Excellence Award in 2017.

The Design Story

In European folklore storks returning each spring were welcomed as bringers of prosperity, nesting on rooftops as a household blessing, and in fairy tales birds stand for new life and happiness. Eguchi Toys made this handcrafted stork as a symbol of hope and new beginnings, for a living room, a desk corner or a child's room.

Kentaro Eguchi trained as a fine artist at New York's School of Visual Arts, then spent decades in early-childhood classrooms: he is a qualified Montessori teacher and opened Ivy's House Montessori kindergarten in Taipei in 1997. In 2015 he started Eguchi Toys, where designers, carpenters and preschool educators work side by side, and the pieces have since travelled to Maison&Objet Paris and the Nuremberg International Toy Fair.

Why You'll Love It

• It moves by hand, with no batteries, motor or electronic music.
• Unpainted pine shows its grain and works in any palette, from Scandinavian white to warm walnut.
• Leather and wood age well, so it looks better with years rather than worse.
• It's large enough to read from across the room, about 39.4 inches long.
• It's award-winning, US CPSIA tested and made in Taiwan.

Made for Real Life

Hang it from a ceiling hook fixed into the ceiling (hardware not included), well out of a baby's reach; allow about 120 cm (47.2 in) of hanging height. Dust it with a dry cloth, keep it out of direct sun and away from heaters, and it will fly for years.

Questions We Hear Most

Can the Stork Mobile Large, Wood by Eguchi Toys hang outside a nursery?

Yes. Eguchi designs its flying birds for living rooms, studies and desks as well as children's rooms.

Why is a moving stork good for a baby?

Eguchi Toys, which comes from a Montessori background, notes that following a slowly moving object helps babies practice visual tracking, which supports focus and hand-eye coordination.

How much space does the Stork Mobile Large, Wood need?

About 95 × 100 cm (37.4 × 39.4 in) of spread and 120 cm (47.2 in) of hanging height, per Eguchi Toys.

What do I need to hang the Stork Mobile Large, Wood by Eguchi Toys?

Eguchi recommends a ceiling hook fixed securely into the ceiling (any sturdy hardware-store hook works; hardware isn't included). If you have a sturdy horizontal bar or a light-steel ceiling frame, an S-hook works, and on a magnetic surface a strong magnet can hold it.

Blue or natural wood: which stork mobile suits my room?

Natural wood is the quiet choice for neutral, Scandinavian or Japandi rooms; Blue adds a soft pop of color.

What recognition has the Eguchi mobile received?

The Mobile Birds series won a Golden Pin Design Award and a Cultural and Creative Excellence Award in 2017.

Why We Love It

Most children's products are designed to be replaced. Eguchi Toys designs the opposite: a few honest objects in wood, shaped by a teacher who has spent decades watching how children learn, and beautiful enough that nobody wants to hide them away.
