The Eclipse Pendant Light hides its bulb completely. Spiralling bands of timber wrap around the light source, and the light reaches the room by reflecting off the inner faces of the wood.

Designed by Alex MacMaster, the Eclipse is made by hand to order in five sizes, from a 10.2 in Mini to a 35.4 in Extra Large, in oak, walnut or birch ply.

The Design Story

Like the moon passing in front of the sun, the Eclipse conceals its source and lets only a glow escape. The bands of timber twist around the bulb at an angle, so light bounces between them before leaving the shade. That reflection spreads the light evenly and lights up the grain of the timber itself.

The result is a rare balance: enough useful light to work by, with the soft ambience of a sculptural lamp. Owners appreciate never seeing the bulb at all.

About the Designer

Alex MacMaster founded MacMaster Design in 2009 on a simple belief: that the objects we live with every day deserve the care usually kept for fine art. He works from a studio in the Worcestershire countryside, at The Guildings in Trimpley near Bewdley, and designs and builds each piece himself, from the first sketch to the final finish.

His work draws on Art Deco geometry, the organic forms of plants and flowers, and the quiet beauty of timber grain. Design, development, making and packing all happen under one roof, and offcuts from one range feed the next, so very little goes to waste. MacMaster pieces now light private homes, luxury hotels and flagship stores across the UK, Europe and beyond.
