Alex MacMaster launched it in 2020. It is handmade to order in Worcestershire in oak or walnut, in three sizes.

The Design Story

The Cocoon began as a pendant for stairwells, where its long spiralling form could be seen from every landing. On the wall, the same idea becomes a vertical lantern: strips of timber twist around a hidden light source, closing in at each end like a seed pod.

The light it gives highlights the natural warmth and character of the wood, and the shadows it casts change as you move past it. Every strip is shaped and fixed by hand in Alex's workshop from responsibly sourced timber.

About the Designer

Alex MacMaster founded MacMaster Design in 2009 on a simple belief: that the objects we live with every day deserve the care usually kept for fine art. He works from a studio in the Worcestershire countryside, at The Guildings in Trimpley near Bewdley, and designs and builds each piece himself, from the first sketch to the final finish.

His work draws on Art Deco geometry, the organic forms of plants and flowers, and the quiet beauty of timber grain. Design, development, making and packing all happen under one roof, and offcuts from one range feed the next, so very little goes to waste. MacMaster pieces now light private homes, luxury hotels and flagship stores across the UK, Europe and beyond.

Choose the Cocoon for generous spaces: great rooms, hallways, stairwells and restaurant or hotel walls. The Small suits a single wall panel; the Medium and Large come into their own in high-ceilinged rooms and in series. Pendant and wall lights should be installed by a qualified electrician.
