The Cocoon Pendant Light is an open spiral of eight laminated timber leaves, drawn out long and slender like a cocoon. Warm light travels along the inside of the leaves and shows the contrast between their inner and outer faces.
Designed by Limahl Asmall for MacMaster and launched in 2010, the Cocoon is made by hand to order in Worcestershire in three lengths, up to 47.2 in.
“Where timber becomes art.”
The Design Story
Eight thin, ultra-durable timber laminations are twisted into an expressive open spiral. The structure is modest, a light frame of leaves with the light at its centre, but the result is striking: the glow climbs the inner veneers and reveals a lovely contrast between the lit interior and the timber outside.
Using thin laminations keeps the amount of timber to a minimum, lowering the light's footprint while keeping its elegance. Each leaf is certified birch plywood faced with American white oak or black walnut.
About the Studio
Alex MacMaster founded MacMaster Design in 2009 on a simple belief: that the objects we live with every day deserve the care usually kept for fine art. He works from a studio in the Worcestershire countryside, at The Guildings in Trimpley near Bewdley, where every piece is made by hand, from the first sketch to the final finish.
His work draws on Art Deco geometry, the organic forms of plants and flowers, and the quiet beauty of timber grain. Design, development, making and packing all happen under one roof, and offcuts from one range feed the next, so very little goes to waste. MacMaster pieces now light private homes, luxury hotels and flagship stores across the UK, Europe and beyond. The Cocoon was designed for the studio by Limahl Asmall and is made there to the same exacting standard.
Why You'll Love It
The Cocoon's long, vertical form fills height in a way few lights can. In a stairwell or under a tall ceiling, a group of Cocoons at staggered drops becomes one sculpture. On its own over a table or beside a bed, it is a slim column of warm light that never blocks the view.
Where It's Best Placed
Stairwells are its signature setting, and the maker also recommends it over dining tables, in kitchens, bedrooms and corridors. The Large (47.2 in long) and Medium (35.4 in) suit tall ceilings and stair voids; the Small (17.7 in) works singly over an island or as a pair of bedside drops.

Questions We Hear Most
Who designed the Cocoon Pendant Light?
The Cocoon was designed by Limahl Asmall for MacMaster and launched in 2010. It is made by hand in the MacMaster workshop in Worcestershire, England.
How is the Cocoon Pendant Light constructed?
It is an open structure of eight thin laminated timber leaves twisted into a spiral. Each leaf is certified birch plywood faced with oak or walnut, and the light at the centre glows along the inner veneers.
Why is the Cocoon Pendant Light popular for stairwells?
Its long, slim shape fills vertical space. Hung in a group at different drops, Cocoons light a stair void or a tall ceiling evenly while reading as a single sculpture.
Which Cocoon Pendant Light length should I pick?
The Large is 47.2 in (120 cm) long and the Medium 35.4 in (90 cm), both suited to tall ceilings and stairwells. The Small is 17.7 in (45 cm) long and suits dining tables, kitchens and bedside drops.
What comes with the Cocoon Pendant Light?
MacMaster supplies a cord set with every light. The bulb is not included, and pendant lights should be installed by a qualified electrician.
How long will my Cocoon Pendant Light take?
Each Cocoon Pendant Light is made to order by hand in Worcestershire, England. Allow about 4 to 8 weeks for it to be shaped, assembled and finished in the workshop, plus shipping time to you. The wait is part of what you are buying: a light made for your home, not taken from a shelf.
