The Bud Vase is MacMaster's smallest sculpture: nested arches of curved oak or walnut that cradle a slim glass tube, made to show off a single stem. The smooth, organic curves bring the grain of the timber to the fore, so the vase is as much a small artwork as a vessel.
Designed and handmade by Alex MacMaster in Worcestershire, it comes in two sizes, with the glass vessel included.
“Where timber becomes art.”
The Design Story
Alex shaped the Bud Vase around one idea: give a single flower the setting it deserves. Layers of thin timber are bent into concentric arches that stand on their own feet, and the glass tube sits within them, so the stem appears to rise straight out of the wood.
The form is simple, but the curves are what make it striking: light slides along each arch and picks out the figure of the grain. Use it with a fresh bloom, with dried stems, or even as a diffuser for a permanent display. The timber comes only from FSC and PEFC certified suppliers.
About the Designer
Alex MacMaster founded MacMaster Design in 2009 on a simple belief: that the objects we live with every day deserve the care usually kept for fine art. He works from a studio in the Worcestershire countryside, at The Guildings in Trimpley near Bewdley, and designs and builds each piece himself, from the first sketch to the final finish.
His work draws on Art Deco geometry, the organic forms of plants and flowers, and the quiet beauty of timber grain. Design, development, making and packing all happen under one roof, and offcuts from one range feed the next, so very little goes to waste. MacMaster pieces now light private homes, luxury hotels and flagship stores across the UK, Europe and beyond.
Why You'll Love It
It turns one stem from the garden into a moment. The Bud Vase is small enough for a bedside table, a desk or a kitchen windowsill, yet it has real presence, especially in a pair or a line of three. Walnut brings richness and contrast to bright petals; oak gives a light, Scandinavian feel. It is also a beautiful handmade gift, ready to use straight from the box.
Where It's Best Placed
Place it where it will be seen up close: a bedside table, a desk, a bathroom shelf or a dining table set for two. Line several along a mantelpiece or a long table for a gallery effect, or mix oak and walnut for contrast.
