The Bloom Vase turns the usual idea of a vase around. Instead of hiding behind the flowers, its slatted timber body swells outward, draws in at the neck and opens again at the rim, framing whatever it holds like a living sculpture.
Alex MacMaster builds each one by hand in his Worcestershire workshop, in oak or walnut, generously sized for a full bouquet, a single dramatic stem or a dried botanical arrangement.
“Where timber becomes art.”
The Design Story
The Bloom is made from individual vertical slats, each shaped so the grain follows the curve of the form. Assembled by hand, the slats read from a distance as one carved piece, yet up close every strip is its own small, considered detail. That slatted construction is what gives the vase its lightness.
The timber is FSC certified oak or walnut, finished with a natural protective oil that lets the wood mellow and deepen over the years, so the vase gradually takes on a character of its own. It is a piece designed to be looked at, full or empty.
About the Designer
Alex MacMaster founded MacMaster Design in 2009 on a simple belief: that the objects we live with every day deserve the care usually kept for fine art. He works from a studio in the Worcestershire countryside, at The Guildings in Trimpley near Bewdley, and designs and builds each piece himself, from the first sketch to the final finish.
His work draws on Art Deco geometry, the organic forms of plants and flowers, and the quiet beauty of timber grain. Design, development, making and packing all happen under one roof, and offcuts from one range feed the next, so very little goes to waste. MacMaster pieces now light private homes, luxury hotels and flagship stores across the UK, Europe and beyond.
Why You'll Love It
Most vases are containers; the Bloom is a centrepiece in its own right. Its silhouette holds the eye on a bare table and gives even a few garden stems a sense of occasion. Walnut brings a rich, dark warmth, while oak is lighter and brighter. Because it is shaped slat by slat, the grain of each vase is unique, and the oiled finish will age gracefully alongside you.
Where It's Best Placed
Set it at the centre of a dining table, on a hallway console where it greets guests, or on a low side table where its curves can be seen in profile. It suits heritage rooms and calm, plaster-and-linen modern interiors equally well, and it brings a gallery-like note to hotel lobbies, restaurant entrances and studios.

Questions We Hear Most
Who designed the Bloom Vase?
The Bloom Vase is designed and handmade by Alex MacMaster, founder of MacMaster Design, in his workshop in Worcestershire, England.
How is the Bloom Vase made?
Each vertical slat is shaped individually so the grain follows the curve of the vase, then the slats are assembled by hand and finished with a natural protective oil. The result looks carved from one piece, but every strip is its own detail.
What can I display in the Bloom Vase?
It is generously scaled for a full bouquet, a tall sculptural single stem, or a dried botanical arrangement, and it is designed to look like a piece of art even when it is empty.
Should I choose oak or walnut for my Bloom Vase?
Walnut is deep and warm and makes bright flowers glow; oak is paler and fresher and suits light, airy rooms. Both are FSC certified timbers, and the oiled finish lets either one mellow beautifully with age.
Can the Bloom Vase be made in a bespoke size or timber?
Yes. MacMaster tailors the Bloom's size, timber and proportion for homeowners, interior designers and architects, including larger floor-scale versions. Contact us and we will help you start a commission.
How long does a handmade Bloom Vase take to arrive?
Each Bloom Vase is built to order by hand in Worcestershire, England. Allow about 4 to 8 weeks for it to be shaped and finished in the workshop, plus shipping time to you: a short wait for a vase made just for your home.
