STJ arranges eighteen small lights into a quiet square formation. From a 48 inch square canopy, eighteen tall frosted light guides hang at one level, each capped with a 3 inch brim, like a field of tiny lanterns set out on a grid. Seen from below, the brims make an ordered pattern of discs; seen from the side, the slender glowing guides form a single, even plane of light.
The light guides carry LED light down their frosted length, so each one glows from end to end, and the brims give a soft downward focus while adding a crisp graphic edge. The large square canopy, assembled from 24 inch panels and only 2.5 inches deep, turns the ceiling itself into part of the composition. Matte Black reads bold and architectural, White blends the canopy into the ceiling so the eighteen lights hover, and Polished Chrome brings bright metallic accents to every socket.
Design notes
- A level field: eighteen pendants set at one height across a 48 in (122 cm) square for calm, ordered geometry.
- Tall frosted guides: each light guide glows along its length with no visible source.
- Brims for focus: 3 in brims cap every guide, giving shape and a gentle downward direction.
- Shallow canopy: 48 in x 48 in (122 x 122 cm), 2.5 in (6.4 cm) deep; field adjustable from 8 in to 106 in overall.
- Three finishes: Matte Black, White or Polished Chrome on the faceplates and sockets.

Stephen Blackman and Blackjack Lighting

Blackjack Lighting is the studio of industrial designer Stephen Blackman, its President and Chief Design Officer. Trained in industrial design at Syracuse University, Blackman began his lighting career in 1984 at Sonneman Design Group, then founded Blackman Design Associates in 1988, designing decorative and architectural lighting for manufacturers including Kichler. He launched Blackjack in 2013 in suburban Chicago, now based in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, to build fixtures conceived for LED from the first sketch.
His argument is that the LED should change the shape of a light, not just its efficiency. Rather than hiding a new source inside old bulb-and-shade forms, Blackjack designs around the small, flat, cool-running LED: thin discs, slim rods, glowing rings and lenses that let the light itself become the object. In his own words, "Decorative lighting by its nature is not primarily about optimizing lamp efficiency, it is primarily about decoration!" STJ multiplies one small LED light guide into a disciplined grid, so the fixture becomes a plane of light rather than a single object.
Questions
What is the idea behind STJ?
A calm grid of small lights. Eighteen frosted light guides with brims hang at one level from a square canopy, creating an ordered plane of light over a table, lobby or living space.
Who is behind Blackjack Lighting?
Industrial designer Stephen Blackman, President and Chief Design Officer, who has designed lighting since 1984 and founded Blackjack in 2013 to make fixtures conceived for LED.
Which finish should I choose?
Matte Black gives a bold, architectural canopy and dark brims; White lets the canopy blend into the ceiling so the lights hover; Polished Chrome adds bright accents at each socket.
How does the light look, and can it be dimmed?
Each guide glows evenly along its frosted length; together they give 1,530 lumens at 3000K and 90 CRI. It runs on 120-277V and dims on TRIAC, ELV or 0-10V controls.
What warranty does it carry?
Three years on the integrated LED source and LED power supply, and one year on materials and workmanship, for the original buyer in the US and Canada.
