Novo 36 is a long, slender tube, 36 inches tall and only 1.5 inches across, that ends in light. The body is a plain cylinder in Matte Black, White or Polished Chrome; at its tip sits one of five interchangeable diffusers, so the same strict vertical line can finish in a sparkle of bubbles, a soft frosted glow, a thin luminous band or a small reflector cup. Hung in a room it looks almost like a pencil stroke dropped from the ceiling, with the light only at the very end.
The length is the point. At 36 inches the tube carries the eye a long way down, which makes Novo 36 especially striking in tall rooms, stairwells and over long counters, and dramatic when several are hung together at different heights. The choice of diffuser sets the mood: Bubbles and Frosted give a visible glowing tip, the Luminous Ring a fine halo, and the Reflector Ring, with a gold or white interior, a more focused downlight.
Design notes
- Light at the tip: an integrated 5 W LED sits at the end of the tube, behind the diffuser you choose.
- Extreme proportion: 36 in (91.4 cm) tall and 1.5 in (3.8 cm) wide, a line rather than a shade.
- Five diffusers: Bubbles or Frosted (7.5 in / 19.1 cm), Luminous Ring, or Reflector Ring with Gold or White interior.
- Fascia canopy: a 2.5 in round canopy only 0.4 in deep keeps the ceiling detail minimal.
- Three finishes: Matte Black for graphic contrast, White to blend, Polished Chrome for reflection.

Stephen Blackman and Blackjack Lighting

Blackjack Lighting is the studio of industrial designer Stephen Blackman, its President and Chief Design Officer. Trained in industrial design at Syracuse University, Blackman began his lighting career in 1984 at Sonneman Design Group, then founded Blackman Design Associates in 1988, designing decorative and architectural lighting for manufacturers including Kichler. He launched Blackjack in 2013 in suburban Chicago, now based in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, to build fixtures conceived for LED from the first sketch.
His argument is that the LED should change the shape of a light, not just its efficiency. Rather than hiding a new source inside old bulb-and-shade forms, Blackjack designs around the small, flat, cool-running LED: thin discs, slim rods, glowing rings and lenses that let the light itself become the object. In his own words, "Decorative lighting by its nature is not primarily about optimizing lamp efficiency, it is primarily about decoration!" Novo 36 stretches the slim rod to its limit: a yard-long line that comes alive only at its glowing tip.
Questions
What is the idea behind Novo 36?
To make a pendant that is almost all line. A 36 in tube, just 1.5 in wide, carries the eye down to a small diffuser where the light is concentrated.
Who is behind Blackjack Lighting?
Industrial designer Stephen Blackman, President and Chief Design Officer, who has designed lighting since 1984 and founded Blackjack in 2013 to make LED-native fixtures.
Which diffuser should I choose?
Bubbles adds sparkle, Frosted gives the softest glowing tip, the Luminous Ring a fine halo, and the Reflector Ring a more directed downlight, warm with the Gold interior or bright with the White. Mixing diffusers in one group works well.
How bright is it, and how is it dimmed?
368 lumens at 3000K with a 90 CRI. It runs from a remote driver, sold separately, that dims on TRIAC, ELV and 0-10V controls.
What warranty does it carry?
Three years on the integrated LED source and LED power supply, and one year on materials and workmanship, for the original buyer in the US and Canada.
