The A7 Disk is a ceiling light pared back to one gesture: a ring and a lens. A slim trim band, three quarters of an inch wide, holds a frosted acrylic diffuser across a 7-inch circle, and the whole fixture stands just over an inch proud of the surface. There is no visible lamp, no shade and no hardware to read; switched off it is a neat graphic circle, switched on it becomes a flat, softly lit disc.
Its thinness comes straight from the LED. A low-voltage board sits directly behind the lens, so the fixture needs no depth for a bulb and no vents for heat, and the light spreads evenly across the whole face instead of collecting in a bright spot. The trim decides how the disc sits in a room: White merges into a painted ceiling until only the glowing lens remains, Matte Black draws a crisp outline, and Brushed Nickel adds a quiet metallic edge.
Design notes
- Even, low-glare light: the frosted acrylic lens spreads 900 lumens across the full face, so the disc glows rather than glares.
- Minimal profile: 1.05 in (2.67 cm) deep on a 7 in (17.7 cm) diameter, about the proportion of a dinner plate laid flat.
- Materials and optics: durable plastic body with a frosted acrylic diffuser and a 0.75 in (1.9 cm) trim ring.
- Configurable light: specified in 2700K to 5000K, with 3000K as the standard warm white, and 90 CRI throughout.
- Three trims: White, Matte Black or Brushed Nickel, each changing how strongly the circle is drawn on the ceiling or wall.

Stephen Blackman and Blackjack Lighting

Blackjack Lighting is the studio of industrial designer Stephen Blackman, its President and Chief Design Officer. Trained in industrial design at Syracuse University, Blackman began his lighting career in 1984 at Sonneman Design Group, then founded Blackman Design Associates in 1988, designing decorative and architectural lighting for manufacturers including Kichler. He launched Blackjack in 2013 in suburban Chicago, now based in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, to build fixtures conceived for LED from the first sketch.
His argument is that the LED should change the shape of a light, not just its efficiency. Rather than hiding a new source inside old bulb-and-shade forms, Blackjack designs around the small, flat, cool-running LED: thin discs, slim rods, glowing rings and lenses that let the light itself become the object. In his own words, "Decorative lighting by its nature is not primarily about optimizing lamp efficiency, it is primarily about decoration!" The A7 Disk applies that idea to the everyday ceiling light: a lens and a ring, barely an inch deep, with nothing left over.
Questions
What is the idea behind the A7 Disk?
To make a surface light that reads as nothing more than a circle of light. Because the LED sits flat behind the lens, the fixture can be only 1.05 in deep, with a thin trim ring as its only detail.
Who designs Blackjack Lighting fixtures?
The studio is led by industrial designer Stephen Blackman, President and Chief Design Officer, who has designed lighting since 1984 and founded Blackjack in 2013 to make fixtures built around LED.
Which trim finish should I choose?
White is the most discreet on a white ceiling, leaving just the glowing lens. Matte Black outlines the disc as a bold graphic ring, and Brushed Nickel gives a soft metallic edge that pairs with nickel or steel hardware.
What is the light like, and can it be dimmed?
900 lumens at 3000K with a 90 CRI, diffused evenly through frosted acrylic. On 120V it dims with a TRIAC (phase) dimmer; on 277V it dims with 0-10V controls.
What warranty does it carry?
Three years on the integrated LED and its power supply, and one year on materials and workmanship, for the original buyer in the US and Canada.
