Aegis Medium Travertine Table Lamp by Sean Lavin for Visual Comfort

The Aegis Medium Travertine Table Lamp by Sean Lavin pairs a wide, shallow brass shade with a tapered base of natural travertine. It is 16.6 inches tall and 18.2 inches across, plugs into a wall outlet with a six-foot black cloth cord, and spreads a warm glow from beneath the shade.

A touch dimmer built into the lamp gives you three light levels. Choose Dark Bronze with Dark Travertine, or Natural Brass with Natural Travertine.

The Design Story

Sean Lavin designs lighting by working with light, form and material, drawing on art, architecture, travel and technology. Aegis is built on a simple contrast: a thin metal canopy that seems to float, held by a heavy stone stem. The shade is wide enough to feel like a roof, and the stem tapers to a narrow footprint, so the lamp reads as a mushroom or a small pavilion rather than a conventional lamp with a shade. Visual Comfort calls it the perfect accent to a transitional space.

Why You'll Love It

Aegis makes a strong silhouette on a console or credenza and a quiet glow when the light is on. The integrated LED delivers 560 lumens at 2700K and 90 CRI, noticeably more output than the smaller Kennett lamps, and the three-step touch dimmer lets you set the level. In Dark Bronze with Dark Travertine the lamp is moody and graphic, and in Natural Brass with Natural Travertine it is lighter and warmer, with a metal that deepens as it ages.

Built to Be Handled

The shade is brass and the base is travertine, and the lamp weighs 33.5 lbs, enough to keep the wide shade steady. It is ETL listed and intended for indoor use. Visual Comfort backs it with a five-year warranty. Natural stone varies from piece to piece with natural inclusions, so your base will have its own veining. The brass finish is a living finish that will patina and warm with age, and Visual Comfort says a brass cleaner can restore it if the patina turns uneven.

Where It Shines

On a console, credenza, sideboard, entry table or a wide nightstand, or in the middle of a coffee table or dining sideboard where a low, wide lamp keeps sight lines open.

Who This Is Not For

With an 18.2 inch shade, Aegis needs a surface with room around it, so it is not for a narrow nightstand or a crowded shelf. It is an ambient lamp rather than a task lamp, and it is intended for indoor use. At 33.5 lbs it is better placed once than moved often.

Questions We Hear Most

How wide is the shade?

The shade is 18.2 inches across and 3.1 inches deep. The lamp stands 16.6 inches tall on a 6.9 inch base.

Will the stone look like the photos?

Close, but not identical. Travertine is natural stone and varies from piece to piece with natural inclusions.

How bright is it?

It delivers 560 lumens at 2700K and 90 CRI. A three-step touch dimmer on the lamp lets you set the level.

Is the bulb replaceable?

The lamp uses a built-in LED module rated for more than 50,000 hours (L70), so there is no bulb to buy or change.

How long is the cord?

The cord is 6 feet (72 inches) of black cloth cable.

Which finish should I choose?

Dark Bronze with Dark Travertine is the dramatic pairing, and Natural Brass with Natural Travertine is the lighter, warmer one that suits pale rooms and wood.

Why We Love It

Aegis is a rare lamp where the stone and the metal each do something different, and together they look balanced.
