Glo Wall Sconce by Penta

Glo wall sconce puts Penta’s glass sphere, designed in 2009 by Carlo Colombo, on a slim wall fitting in matt black or matt gold.

It comes in 2 sizes (Mini and Medium), 8 glass finishes (Transparent, 4ever, Silver, Black, Gold, Rose Gold, Green and Bronze) and 2 metal structure finishes (Matt Black and Matt Gold).

The Design Story

Penta designs and makes its lamps by hand in Brianza, Italy. The Glo sconce holds the glass sphere out from the wall on a restrained metal structure, so the light and the reflections sit at eye level. With two metal finishes and eight glass finishes you can pair a black structure with a mirrored sphere, or a gold structure with a transparent one, and match the lamp to your hardware.

The Designer

Carlo Colombo is counted among the most important Italian architects and designers on the international scene. He has worked with makers such as Poliform, Flexform, Giorgetti, Cappellini, Poltrona Frau, Cartier, Elie Saab, Bentley Home, Bugatti Home and Trussardi Casa, and for Penta he designed Glo, Glo Maxi, Je Suis and Elisabeth. Beyond products and furniture he advises brands on strategy and marketing, curates exhibitions and works as an art director. In 2011 he taught design at the De Tao Masters Academy in Beijing. His studio began in design and interiors and grew to take on construction and architecture in Italy and abroad. Glo is his 2009 design for Penta.

How It Was Made

Glo’s glass is borosilicate, the same family of glass used in laboratory ware. It expands only about a third as much as ordinary soda-lime glass when it heats up, so it resists thermal stress, it withstands temperatures around 500°C (932°F), and it stands up well to chemicals. In Brianza the glass is worked by hand with powerful burners, then finished with a transparent, a 4ever or a mirroring coat in the color you choose.

Bulbs are not included: the Mini uses a 20W G9 and the Medium a 25W E12. Penta’s UL certification covers the Medium. Lumen output depends on the glass; for the Medium Penta lists about 625 lm for transparent, 422 lm for silver and gold, 380 lm for 4ever and rose gold, and 337 lm for black.

Can the Glo wall sconce be dimmed?

Penta lists it as on-off or dimmable (phase cut). Dimming needs dimmable bulbs and compatible wiring, and the bulbs are not included.
