Gems is a pendant of stacked glass shades and spheres, designed in 2023 for Penta by Francesca Lanzavecchia.
It comes in 4 sizes (Short 1 D30, Short 1 D60, Tall 2 D60 and Tall 3 D30) and 4 color schemes: Cold Neutral, Warm Neutral, Cold Color and Warm Color, with a choice of 3000K or 2700K light.
The Design Story
Penta designs and makes its lamps by hand in Brianza, Italy. Gems builds its light from borosilicate glass shades, plates and spheres that are stacked on a thin stem, with a white etched glass diffuser that spreads the light. Penta’s color chart shows four schemes. Cold Neutral is smoked grey glass. Warm Neutral is pale champagne glass with gold spheres. Cold Color is a clear blue, and Warm Color is a soft pink. Penta describes the result as an infinite combination spread through a kaleidoscope of soft and gradient colors.
The Designer
Francesca Lanzavecchia was born in Pavia in 1983. She studied at the Politecnico di Milano and took a master’s degree with honors at the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2008, then studied Universal Design. In 2010 she cofounded the studio Lanzavecchia + Wai in Pavia and Singapore with Hunn Wai, where she has been Creative Director since 2012. Gems is her 2023 design for Penta.

How It Was Made
Penta designs and builds its lamps by hand in Brianza, Italy, and backs them with a 2-year manufacturer guarantee from the Auralis Group. Gems is made of borosilicate glass with a white etched glass diffuser, and it uses an integrated LED that is dimmable with 0-10V.

Why You’ll Love It
Gems is as much sculpture as lighting. The Short versions hang low and wide over a table, while the Tall versions stack two or three shades into a column. The color schemes change the mood, from smoky and quiet to blue and pink. The glass is borosilicate, and the diffuser is white etched glass, so the glow is soft and even.

The LED is built in, so there is no bulb to buy or change. Gems dims with 0-10V, and Penta’s care instructions and USA installation sheet are linked above. Each size has its own drawing and weight, so please check the size table before you plan the ceiling fixing.

How big are the Gems pendants?
Short 1 D30 is 9.5 in (24 cm) wide and 18.5 in (47 cm) tall. Short 1 D60 is 22.8 in (58 cm) wide and 18.9 in (48 cm) tall. Tall 2 D60 is 22.8 in (58 cm) wide and 23.6 in (60 cm) tall. Tall 3 D30 is 9.5 in (24 cm) wide and 24.4 in (62 cm) tall.
What do the color schemes look like?
Cold Neutral is smoked grey glass. Warm Neutral is pale champagne glass with gold spheres. Cold Color is a clear blue, and Warm Color is a soft pink, as shown in Penta’s color chart.
Should I choose 3000K or 2700K for Gems?
Both are warm white. 3000K gives a slightly clearer light, while 2700K is softer and more golden. Pick 2700K for dining and lounge spaces, or 3000K for kitchens and work areas.
Can Gems be dimmed?
Yes. Gems is dimmable with 0-10V.
Can I replace the bulb in a Gems pendant?
The LED is integrated into the lamp, so there is no bulb to buy or match.
