Eva Table Lamp by Oluce

Eva is a table lamp shaped like a black sphere that opens to a glowing gold-leaf interior, designed in 2017 for Oluce by Francesca Borelli.

It comes in one finish: matt black outside with gold leaf inside.

The Design Story

Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, builds lamps around one clear idea. Eva plays with opposites such as hollow and solid, light and dark. The body is a ball that holds the LED source, open on one side and resting on a slim cylindrical base. A curved surface closes most of the sphere and leaves a circular, spiral-shaped band of light that recalls an eclipse. Slide that surface in or out and the amount of light changes, revealing more or less of the gold leaf inside.

The Story

Borelli wanted the person using the lamp to be part of the design. By moving the cover along its telescopic stem you decide how much of the golden interior to show, from a thin crescent of light to a wide, warm glow. The black outside and gold inside are meant to evoke the moon and the astronomical events that hide it.

The Designers

Francesca Borelli was born in Rome in 1993. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Product Design at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome and went on to a master’s in Design at the University of Florence. Her interest in design began in childhood, drawing imagined chairs in her mother’s architecture studio. She is drawn to furniture that is both emotional and conceptual, and she values form and colour equally.

How It Was Made

Eva is made in metal. The sphere is finished matt black on the outside, and the inside is lined with gold leaf. The LED source sits inside the ball and the cover moves on a telescopic stem to adjust the light.

How do I change the light on Eva?

No. Oluce lists Eva as not dimmable. You control the light by moving the cover.
