Cylinda LED Table Lamp by Oluce

Cylinda is a table lamp built from two metal cylinders of different sizes, a slim tall base and a wide shallow disc, designed by Angeletti & Ruzza for Oluce in 2017.

It comes in 2 versions: a monochrome Matt Black, and a two-colour Satin Gold disc on an anthracite base.

The Design Story

Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, built Cylinda around a single idea: eliminate everything that is not absolutely necessary. The slimmer, taller cylinder becomes the base, supporting a second, wider disc that forms the shade, with an integrated LED shining beneath it.

The Story

In the designers’ own words, the mantra guiding Cylinda was to add nothing that is not absolutely necessary. Its quiet presence aims to turn everyday routine into everyday poetics. In the monochrome Matt Black, the lines read as refined and minimal; in the two-colour version, a brushed gold disc sits on the anthracite base as a discreet decorative touch.

The Designers

Silvana Angeletti (born in Rieti, 1969) and Daniele Ruzza (born in Rome, 1967) studied industrial design at ISIA in Rome before opening their studio, angeletti ruzza design. Their work has won a mention at the Compasso d’Oro, three ADI Design Index selections, a Red Dot Award and two Designpreis nominations, and they have worked with Italian companies including Teuco, Flaminia, Poltrona Frau and Oluce. Since 2010 they have taught industrial design at IED Roma and the Università di Ascoli Piceno.

“it succeeds in creating a positive atmosphere that can transform everyday routine into everyday poetics”

Oluce, on Cylinda

How It Was Made

Cylinda is made of metal in Italy, with an integrated LED set beneath the wide disc shade. The base and shade share the same minimal, geometric language, finished either in matt black throughout or with a brushed gold disc on an anthracite base.

Awards and Recognition

Cylinda was a prizewinner at the Archiproducts Design Awards 2018, chosen by an independent jury of design and architecture professionals together with the Archiproducts editorial team.

Why You’ll Love It

Cylinda is a quiet, confident shape for a nightstand or a console: nothing added that doesn’t need to be there, and a warm pool of light from underneath the disc. The gold version adds a small, elegant flash of contrast.

Made for Real Life

The 12.5W LED is integrated, so there is no bulb to change, and its 3000K light has a CRI over 85. The lamp is not dimmable and is CE rated. Wipe the metal with a soft dry cloth and skip abrasive or solvent cleaners.
