Coupe is a floor lamp with a lacquered base, a chromium-plated stem and a rotating dome, designed by Joe Colombo for Oluce in 1967.
It comes in 2 finishes: Black and Scarlet Red.
The Design Story
Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, built this floor lamp on Coupe’s simple, ingenious mechanism: the dome pivots on the stem so the beam can be aimed up, down or sideways.
The Story
The Coupe series was initially conceived as a variation of the Spider family, also designed by Colombo, from which it kept its base and stem. A simple, ingenious mechanism connects the stem to the dome, letting the beam be directed up, down or sideways. Available with either a semi-cylindrical or a semi-spherical dome, the collection grew over the years into table, floor and wall lamps, and remains one of Oluce’s most renowned and appreciated designs.
The Designers
Joe Colombo was one of the major Italian designers of the postwar years and died in 1971 at the age of 41. Oluce describes his work as an optimistic look toward the future rather than a nostalgic one. He designed integrated living cells such as Visiona ’69 for Bayer and compact self-contained objects such as the Mini-Kitchen of 1963. His other works include the Bobby cart and the Elda armchair (both 1970), a chair for Kartell (1968) and the mp lamp (1972).

Awards and Recognition
Coupe won the International Design Award of the American Institute of Interior Designers in Chicago in 1968. This floor lamp is also held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the design is part of the Neue Sammlung collection in Munich.
