Astro Wall Light by Oluce

Astro is a wall light shaped like a faceted jewel, with a sand-blasted glass diffuser on a painted cast aluminium base, designed by Giopato & Coombes for Oluce in 2015.

It comes in 2 finishes: white and black painted aluminium, both with a transparent sand-blasted glass diffuser.

The Design Story

Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, describes Astro as a solid rhombic dodecahedron made of twelve equal rhombi. Three of the faces are transparent and sanded, and the other faces are opaque, which gives the lamp a jewel-like look. The glass creates a prism effect on the light, and you choose the direction of the lamp when you assemble it.

The Designers

Cristiana Giopato is Italian and Christopher Coombes is British. They began working together in 2004 on an exhibition called In Dust We Trust, which led to the company InDustReal, and a few years later they founded an independent, multidisciplinary studio that blends their two cultural backgrounds. Early work was for Fiam Italia and Guzzini, and they have since designed for Living Divani, Lema, Miniforms and Frag. In 2006 Patricia Urquiola selected them for the Promosedia award, and some of their products have won the Young & Design award in Italy.

“From a flat figure recalling a solid they have created a solid that looks like a plane”

Why You’ll Love It

Astro turns a plain wall into a small piece of sculpture. The sanded glass faces glow softly and the prism effect gives the light a lively edge. Use one as an accent or place two or three together to make a group on the wall.

Made for Real Life

The light takes one G9 bulb up to 33W. The bulb is not included, so choose the warmth and brightness you prefer. The lamp is not dimmable and is CE rated. It does not carry a UL listing. Dust the glass and painted metal with a soft dry cloth and avoid abrasive or solvent cleaners.
