Agnoli is a minimalist floor lamp with a slim nickel stem, a sliding bulb that aims light exactly where you need it and a thick travertine base, designed in 1954 by Tito Agnoli for Oluce.

The Design Story

Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, counts the Agnoli 387 among its oldest and most historic lamps. It is a forerunner of minimalism: a single thin stem, a bulb mounted on a sliding tube and a heavy stone base that keeps everything steady. The bulb is a Cornalux, often called a hammerhead bulb, which sends its light in a very precise direction, so the lamp works like a reading spot you can slide up or down the stem.

The Story

Tito Agnoli drew the lamp in 1954, and Oluce still makes it today with the same logic. Its thick travertine base turns simplicity and function into something close to poetry, as Oluce puts it. It is one of the pieces that show how the company built its name on clean forms in the 1950s.

The Designers

Tito Agnoli was born in Lima, Peru, in 1931 to an Italian family and moved to Italy after the war. He trained as a painter, studied architecture and graduated in 1959. By the early 1950s he was designing for makers such as Arflex, Cinova, Lema, Oluce and Poltrona Frau. He was put forward several times for the Compasso d’Oro and won the gold medal at Neocon in Chicago in 1986. Some of his pieces are in the permanent collection of MoMA. He died in Milan in 2012.

How It Was Made

The Agnoli 387 is built in metal in Italy. The light source slides along a tube on the stem, so you can set the height of the light, and the reflector is finished in matt nickel. The base is thick travertine, a natural stone, so each base has its own pattern.
