The Design Story
Eclisse, designed by Vico Magistretti in 1965, won the Compasso d’Oro Award in 1967 and become ambassador of Italian design worldwide. Eclisse is an avant-garde balance between form and function, design and utility. The concept’s foundation lies in its functionality of adjusting the intensity of light through its rotating inner shade that “eclipses” the light source.
Meet the Designer
Vico Magistretti (1920–2006) was a Milanese architect and one of the masters of Italian design, known for pieces for Cassina, Kartell and De Padova. His Eclisse lamp for Artemide (1965) won the Compasso d'Oro in 1967 and is held by MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
A Museum Piece
The Eclisse is part of the permanent collections at MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Not bad for a lamp whose light you control simply by turning its inner shade.
