Atollo Satin Bronze Table Lamp by Oluce

Atollo is a table lamp built from a cylinder, a cone and a hemisphere, designed by Vico Magistretti in 1977 and made by Oluce. This version is in satin bronze metal.

It comes in 3 sizes: small, medium, large. Each size is a different lamp with its own model number.

The Design Story

Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, describes Atollo as an archetype of the table lamp. It is built from three basic shapes, a cylinder, a cone and a hemisphere, which makes it decorative and functional at once. Vico Magistretti drew it in 1977, and Oluce presents it as one of the icons of Italian design that does not belong to any one period. Oluce makes it in metal.

The Designers

Vico Magistretti was born in Milan in 1920 and graduated in architecture in 1945, then joined his father’s firm. After the war he worked on reconstruction and co-founded the MSA architectural movement, and his Milan buildings include the Torre al Parco and the Piazza San Marco apartment building. He designed for brands such as De Padova, Fritz Hansen, Fontana Arte, Kartell and Oluce. He won a gold medal at the 9th Milan Triennial in 1951 and the Grand Prize at the 10th in 1954, and he received the Compasso d’Oro twice, in 1967 for the Artemide Eclisse lamp and in 1979 for Oluce’s Atollo. He died in Milan in 2006.

How It Was Made

Oluce makes Atollo in Italy. The shade, cone and base are metal, finished in satin bronze.

Awards and Recognition

Atollo 233 won the Compasso d’Oro ADI in 1979. Oluce also lists Atollo among designs held in museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1979), the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1983) and the Triennale di Milano’s Permanent Collection of Italian Design 1945–1990.
