Coolicon Original 1933 Design Vitreous Enamel Pendant — a hand-enamelled British icon from 1933, with glossy color outside, a bright white reflector inside and a vented crown that lights the ceiling as well as the table.
15 colorways. Handmade in England.
The Design Story
In 1933 a British patent described a hanging factory light that cooled hot bulbs through vents in its crown, and the Coolicon name grew out of it. The shades hung over workbenches and in workshops across industrial Britain. Eighty years later, Trent Jennings, now Coolicon’s design director, came across an original enamel shade in a design archive; by 2015 the Standard shade was being made again in Britain, by hand, to the original patent.
Why You’ll Love It
Several thin coats of glass, each fired on its own, give the color a depth that paint can’t match. One fixture does two jobs: a soft glow up through the vents and a crisp beam down from the white reflector. It looks just as good alone as in a row of three over an island. The glossy surface keeps its color for decades, even in strong sun. And every shade wears the little hand-placed Coolicon badge.
Made for Real Life
Kitchen steam and cooking splashes are no problem for a glass surface: with the light off, a soft cloth does the job, and a dab of glass cleaner on the cloth handles anything stubborn. Just keep liquid away from the socket and wipe around the badge. Need a shade that lights a whole table? Meet the Coolicon Large 1933 Design Vitreous Enamel Pendant.

Where It Shines
Above a breakfast bar, either side of the bed in place of lamps, over a desk (just to the side of your writing hand), or in a cluster that turns a dining table into the room’s centerpiece.
Questions We Hear Most
Should I choose the Coolicon Original 1933 or the Large 1933?
The 9-inch Original is the focused one: counters, desks, bedsides and clusters of three or more. The 15.75-inch Large lights a whole table or room on its own.
What makes the enamel on the Coolicon Original 1933 special?
It is real vitreous enamel: layers of glass fused onto steel by hand in a kiln. That gives a deep, glossy color that won’t fade in sun, doesn’t give off VOCs and wipes clean like glass.
Why does the Coolicon Original 1933 glow at the top?
The vents around the crown were designed in 1933 to let heat escape from factory bulbs, so the light spills up onto the ceiling while the white reflector sends a clear beam down. Coolicon’s name comes from that idea: cooling by convection.
What is the paper badge on the Coolicon Original 1933?
Every shade wears Coolicon’s eight-sided badge, printed on a traditional press and placed by hand, per Coolicon, so a few small wrinkles are part of its character. Wipe around it rather than over it.
Can I mix colors with the Coolicon Original 1933?
Yes. All 15 colorways share the same white interior and proportions, so a mixed row or cluster reads as one family. Keep one size per group for a calm line, or mix Original and Large for a layered look.
When will my Coolicon Original 1933 leave the warehouse?
In-stock shades typically leave within 2–3 business days of your order.
