Lanterna is a pendant light made of two bell-shaped glass diffusers, one inside the other, designed by Marta Laudani and Marco Romanelli for Oluce. It hangs from a single cable and holds one bulb.
It comes in 3 finishes: Transparent, Amber and Smoky Grey.
The Design Story
Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, says the two designers enclose the light in “a casing made of air.” A transparent outer bell holds a second, sand-blasted bell that contains the light source, so the glow stays soft and the lamp keeps a light, almost weightless look. The shape is plain and tapered, and it reads as an object even when it is switched off.
The Story
Lanterna was designed in 1998 and has a smaller sister, Lanternina. Oluce has now updated Lanterna with dual Pyrex glass diffusers in two new finishes, amber and smoky grey. In these versions the outer bell is tinted and transparent and the inner bell stays softly sand-blasted, which gives a warmer, more ambient light.
The Designers
Marta Laudani and Marco Romanelli are architects who have worked together since 1988, with offices in Rome and Milan. Their work covers product design, interiors and exhibitions, including “Gio Ponti: a World” at the London Design Museum, and they took part in the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2004. For Oluce they also designed Lanternina, the Fiore series and the Stones lamps.
How It Was Made
The Transparent version is made of blown glass, with a satin-finished anodized metal structure. The Amber and Smoky Grey versions use Pyrex glass for both bells. Oluce makes the lamp in Italy.

Why You’ll Love It
Lanterna gives you a pendant that looks quiet in daylight and glows at night. The nested glass gives depth, the frosted inner bell keeps the light easy on the eyes, and the amber and smoky grey versions add a warm tint to a room without making it dark.
Made for Real Life
The Transparent Lanterna takes one E26 bulb up to 100W. The Amber and Smoky Grey versions take one E26 bulb up to 15W. The lamp is not dimmable and does not include a bulb. The cable is 110.3 in long. Wipe the glass with a soft damp cloth.
