Canopy is a pendant lamp built around an enlarged ceiling rose, a large lacquered aluminum dome that hides an LED circline source, designed by Francesco Rota for Oluce in 2009.
It comes in 2 sizes, Small (23.6 in) and Large (35.4 in), in Black or Scarlet Red.
The Design Story
Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, took a humble detail as the starting point. Canopy owes both its shape and its name to the ceiling rose, one of the simplest and often neglected elements of lighting technology, used to conceal the wires coming out of the ceiling. Rota takes this shape again, enlarges and ennobles it, and makes it the focal point of the project: a large metal lampshade offered in sought-after color combinations.
The Story
Inside the dome sits a particular source of light, the circline bulb, which diffuses a soft, sinuous light into the surrounding environment. Oluce describes it as a suspension lamp with indirect light, with the reflector and lampshade screen in lacquered metal. Today the circline is a 25W LED source in both sizes.
The Designers
Francesco Rota was born in Milan in 1966 and graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Switzerland in 1994. In 1995 he opened the Francesco Rota Design Office in Milan. His interior work includes showrooms for Versus, John Richmond and L’Oreal, and the office, showroom and warehouse interiors of the Oluce factory and headquarters in Milan. His product designs include the home and outdoor collections for Paola Lenti. For Oluce he also designed Ibiza, an outdoor lamp with an integrated loudspeaker. He has received the International Audi Design Award and two honorable mentions at the Compasso d’Oro, in 2001 and 2004.

How It Was Made
Canopy is made of aluminium with a lacquered finish, in Black or Scarlet Red. Oluce makes it in Italy in two diameters, 23.6 in and 35.4 in, and the dome is a single large shade that hides the wiring and the circline LED source.

Why You’ll Love It
Canopy is a big, calm shape that makes a ceiling look finished. The glossy dome catches the room around it, and the light underneath is soft and even instead of harsh. The Small suits a dining table or a kitchen island, and the Large gives a wide living room or a long table a strong central anchor.
Made for Real Life
The 25W LED is integrated, so there is no bulb to change, and its 3000K light is warm. The lamp is not dimmable. The sheet lists CE certification. Dust the lacquered aluminum with a soft dry cloth and skip abrasive or solvent cleaners, which can dull the finish.

Where It Shines
