The Design Story
“The Tolomeo family is expanded to include a new outdoor product. The light source is enclosed in a diffusing cap fitted inside a transparent IP65 plastic unit that recalls old lampposts, in use when light was produced from oil. The structural elements of Tolomeo were strengthened and consolidated to resist to the increased stress.
Meet the Designers
Michele De Lucchi (born 1951 in Ferrara) is an Italian architect and designer and was a member of the Memphis group in the 1980s. With Giancarlo Fassina he designed the Tolomeo in 1987, which won the Compasso d'Oro in 1989 and grew into a whole family, from Micro to Mega.
Giancarlo Fassina is an Italian designer and a longtime Artemide collaborator. His technical precision was key to the Tolomeo, which he co-designed with Michele De Lucchi in 1987.
Famous on Screen
Look closely at M's desk in the James Bond film Skyfall (2012): that is a Tolomeo Basculante table lamp. Few lamps say "serious work happens here" quite like a Tolomeo.
